My middle-class Indian wife is certainly, sometimes, more careful than I am, but, hey! She's been living here for over forty years longer than me, so I really should respect the fact that she is more aware of what goes on behind the scenes than I am.
Whilst I have encountered some people who can be over-protective, we really should have respect for local knowledge. Sometimes we can be a bit foolhardy, us visitors !Prashant has a very good point. Once large-restaurant-overhead economics are left behind, the pricing is going to have a lot to do with the price of the ingredients. A rice shop is a wonderful demonstration of the multiples levels on which the economics of Indian society works. It starts at about Rs12 a kilo, with Basmati reaching well over five times that. Those with a ration card can get even cheaper rice, but the only family I know that have one get the rice for the benefit of their poorer neighbours who don't have the card, and buy better stuff for themselves. Now... Rs12 is perfectly edible. We buy it for the birds, but eat it ourselves sometimes. But what about the cheapest meat? Or chicken? Take it as you find it, I guess... And *so far* this year, the only major tummy upset in our family happened to my wife! That was caused by a dodgy ice cream.

Love that sugar cane juice. But, one time on a long hot summer drive I stopped at a particularly dodgy place in the countryside. My instinct warned me loud and clear and I was nasty ill with fever, probably flu, for a couple of days..

... very common in India, and growing (or maybe just the diagnosis), it seems.

is it called 'gana' in hindi? that's what my brain tells me.
i love it but one thing to watch out for is the ice. It is often strained into a metal bowl that contains a big lump of potentially nasty ice. The danger is that you dont actually see them adding ice so dont say anything. I always have a look to see what's in the bowl ![]() |
