Can one get stringhoppers in South India? If so, are they easily found or only in certain areas?
I live in Toronto and my favourite South Indian restaurant is Madras Palace. They make excellent stringhoppers and that is what my husband orders every time we eat there. Of course, he is anxious to have stringhoppers during our trip in Kerala and Tamil Nadu next year. (They are very short pieces of rice noodles, stirfried with meat and spices. Very spicy!) |

I think so. I'm not mad about them so I haven't looked.
But what I really want to know is why they are called string hoppers?

Just to be picky, the hoppers are bland, but the sauce is tasty.
There is a restaurant in E Ham called Hopper House. Had dosa there the other day. |

It's also called 'sevai' /'shevai' pronounced sh-aye-vai in Tamil.
That is, if we're talking about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopper_(food) rice noodles. Now, as to availability, it depends; most probably you'll get it only during breakfast. and you will have to ask around

Idiyapapam or Noolappam..... got it. Thanx a lot
In Kerala, most restaurants serve it as breakfast along with Puttu and appam. I love to have noolappam with sweet coconut milk. In some parts of kerala they serve it with milk and sugar tho. |
