Strange cuisine question re: coconut
Hi again all,
This may seem like a strange question, but how easy is it to avoid coconut in India (both north and south... we will be going to both)? My husband is quite allergic, and I would hate to have to find ourselves in a hospital for something as avoidable as coconut ingestion . How do you say "I'm allergic to coconut?" or "Does this have coconut in it?" What foods should I look out for specifically (those that always have coconut etc...)? Many thanks! myaheartsyoga

The following thread should be of help/interest although it doesn't talk about coconut specifically. You may want to do a more thorough search with Allergy, Allergies, reaction etc. as key words.
how do you say you have an allergy?

look if you go South then use of Coconut is abundant .......not only as an ingredient but also its oil is used as the cooking medium ......so mainly u will have to be very careful in following states ( Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and very careful in Tamil Nadu, Kerela and Pondicherry ) .......though u can be at lil bit ease in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.....apart from this lot of Goan and Maharashtrian Cooking involves use of coconut.....so be a bit careful there......most common item in which coconut is used will be the chutney that u will be served with Idli's and Dosas both in North and South India.
Apart from these states u will not encounter coconut in 99% of the dishes in the other states....it will only be found either at some south indian eatery or in some sweet form ( like coconut barfi) ........or will be used sparingly as a garnish . In Karnataka too, coconut is used a lot, in curries, sambars and chutneys. Chutneys especially in S Karnataka have coconuts as the main ingredient.
