Soy Flakes....what do you do with them?!
In a moment of madness the other day I picked up some soy flakes. There seems to be a very limited amount of recipes on the net soooo I'm putting it out the for the IMers....what on earth do you do with them? (aside from add the to soup etc)??
I had an idea of making patties, now I'm not so sure ![]() |

A lot of people here use them as vegetarian "meat", they make mince and curries, all sorts of gravy dishes, cutlets and so forth. Just soak it for a little while and cook as you would any meat dish - preferably with a lot of spices. I am not a fan of soya chunks or soya flakes, but I know a lot of people who swear by it.

now that you're stuck with them something has to be done . . . try a keema matar type thing with the flakes (replacing the keema/mince) . . . or stuff them in potato cutlets . . . you'll have to steam them or boil them first . . . if you're adventurous you could make momos ;-)

Thanks for the tips, will let you know if I come up with anything worth recommending!! I don't know if I could do that to a momo though!! stuffing something with them might work hmmmmmmm They are edging their way to the back of the cupboard, so will have to give them a whirl!

If all else fails, you could feed them to your pet cat / dog / favourite stray!

AusE, do not be surprised if those lovely puppies give it a wide berth.
I remember once I had bought some yummy looking malpuas, however one bite was enough to convince me they were made of hardened leather - the type found on a much worn shoe. I saw a fat pussy cat in the garden below so I threw it to him, he toodled up, took once sniff, stuck his nose in the air and walked off with a loud meow. A few hours later I saw a crow pick it up - and drop it in disgust a minute later. Not sure what fate eventually befell that malpua. Maybe even the ants and worms found it too tough! I'd be interested to learn how those puppies reacted, they may not befriend you after all.......... |

OK here's one you might be tempted to try . . . I just love cooking up recipes
![]() Soak the Soy flakes with an equal quantity of Arhar and Lal Masur (I'm not even going to try and translate that one!!) for half an hour. Fry up the usual jeera, pepper and red chilly (maybe a little sarson/mustard seed) add curry leaves for the fizzle . . . ginger and garlic, onions stir a bit on a high flame, add the salt and seasoning then tomatoes (curry basically).Drain the soaking mixture of Dal and Soy and fry it about in the mixture for a bit. Now here's the trick keep add enough water to just cover the dal (ok maybe a wee bit more). Use the water you soaked it in, I hope you haven't thrown it away already!! Now bring the stuff to a boil and pressure! At the first whistle lower the flame and turn off the gas at the second whistle. Let it steep for a bit. At this stage you have pappu . . . sukhi dal. Now for ingesting suggestions . . ![]() It could be a subzi type thing with rotis and mutton curry you could stuff it in toasted sandwiches coat and deep fry balls of the stuff as a snack pass it off as the new age hummus!! Well it would keep in the fridge for ages at any rate . . . and maybe the dogs will condescend after all this effort :-) |

You can use TVP instead of ground beef in chili or spaghetti sauce.
