Southern food

I am going to Kerala for a short trip in a couple days.
I've had no exposure to Southern food at all, and was wondering what absolutely no to miss while I'm there besides dosa and sambar.
Any food suggestions or specific restaurant recs are much appreciated.
I love spicy food, and am pretty convinced there's nothing better than (north) indian food!

Breakfasts are absolute great in the south. Everything with steam flying!! Lunch and dinner in the south are pretty plane. You cannot have so many choices for too many times. North beat south in this.

Southern foods are a bit liquidly in comparison with the northern.

See here what I had for breakfast http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...cat/500/page/2

No two banana-leaf thalis are identical. Similarly, there is an infinite variety on the theme of idlis and dosas. The trick is to patronize a different restaurant for each meal.

Stick to Idly, you will be allright. If you are toooooo careful, and haven't had a dysentry in last two weeks, you may go for Wada.

If you are all right, go for cheap idly-wada which should't cost more than 6 bucks (rupees, i mean). It usually has 2 idlys, one wada, some sambar and some chutney. Do not hesitate to ask for more sambar and chutney (they are like free coke refill in Subway)

Gosh, how much I miss those Idly-wada-sambar-chutney... <crying>please give me some.</crying>

Kerala try "Appam"with Vegetable Stew, want more spiecy then with Chicken Stew.

Less spicey then Appam with Coconut milk.I think is best if you are veggy ).

For breakfast Puttu and Kadala Curry combination is superb.
One more thing its all steam one ,i think you wont get into any health problems.

Hey then dont miss Fish curry or other fish dishes.

Now beach you have gone too far. I am not due for a South India trip till July. And I just have to eat that right NOW. Its a "set dosa" with coconut-copra-chutney and sagoo isn't it? Aaaaaaahrg.... ! Warn someone before putting up such pix.
