One of my son's friends (an NRI which is the only reason I am bothering to ask) told him to be careful we aren't served dog in India. I know there are cultures where dog is eaten, is India really one of them?

I know they do that in Korea, but this is the first I have ever heard anything like this for India, maybe your son's friend was joking?

I think he must have been joking. I mean, when you see Indian dogs, you will not find them appetizing at all.

Dog meat is eaten (and with relish) in some parts of North-East India (Nagaland and Mizoram particularly - though it has been banned by the Mizoram govt .
But as pointed out by others, mentioning it elasewhere in India will result in raised eye brows only.

We are talking about India here, aren't we OR China???

I'm finding this more and more difficult to comprehend.

Unfortunately, there are cat eaters in Chennai. The risk may be a lot lower than loosing one's cat to a passing car, but it does exist.

People travel everywhere in India for work, etc.

The dog thing, I never, ever heard, though.

In Britain we eat pig eyelashes and testicles and ears, mixed with bread. This is a delicacy known as a "sausage".
