Recommendations for Snacks for Long Journey's?

Can anyone recommend any good snacks to take on long bus and train rides in India?

Last time I remember being particularly uninspired by the selection of food in the local Indian grocers.

For the record, I love Indian food, it's just not always convenient to take a masala dosa or a curry on a long journey.

On a train, I usually just buy stuff off the various vendors along the way... on the really long distance routes you get to try a great selection of food as lots of places seem to have their own specialty.

Thanks Maree,

That's good advice. Last time I was a bit suss on eating from the vendors at the train stops. Did you ever get sick from vendor food?

Thanks Maree, I feel much more confident! I'm going to get well and truly stuck into the vendor food. If it's good enough for millions of commuters, it’s good enough for me!

Chappatis and Chicken - dry gravy or aloo is good for train journeys. They last for about a day.

Otherwise, good snaps will be Brittania marie Biscuit, chips, Lehar Namkeens. But, u don't have to carry these with you. These, you can buy at all stalls in the Railway stations.

I usually buy some dry snacks off the shelf in a supermarket for train journeys. If I am visiting my parents, I pack some home cooked food that stays long. This I do knowuing that my mom would pack something for the return trip.

The best. There is no other alternative to taste such a verity of food. If it is not overnight journey, don’t miss the opportunity (water must be bottled). There is no substitute for hot vegetable cutlet (avoid the sauce) / Vada / samosa / masala muri and chai on earthen cup (khuri / chukkar / bhar) in a running train. This is easy to say for us because we are habituated with such foods but it could be a conflict between Indian conditions vs. immunity. So please take care.

Take a selection of dry fruit and a selection of nuts. You can but plenty of crisps, chocolates etc if that is what you are after. On my trip to Pakistan last year I took a supply of cereal bars (bought them in England before I went).
