Ready to Eat Foods

Never been much of a fan for these Ready to Eat Foods that the supermarkets freezers are full of I have found a little bit of bliss. While not readily available in supermarkets that I am aware of, especially where I live, Ready to Eat Palak Paneer and Malak Paneer have been a treat made by MTR Foods of Bangalore.

It appears that the food was developed by Defence Food Research and the sealed foil container and the quality of the food itself tells me that if this is defence standard ration, then signing up for the Indian Army is not a bad idea.

So much of other Indian styled Ready to Eat product seems to be so expensive and this range was half the price.

Thumbs up

ready to eat foods are not that much of a craze here, people still have time on their hands to cook their own meals. yes, there are stuff like 'maggi' that children love and adults also eat once in a while.

I have found them here too, you can get them from several places in the Adelaide Central Markets - on of my favourite haunts in the world, it will be sorely missed when i am gone.

there are 2 brands selling pretty much the same thing, i cant remember the other brand name though.

I usually avoid stuff like that like the palgue, but they are great, especially the ma ki dal. We have been serving them as accompanyments to curries we make at home, you can really turn a simple curry into something great with 2 veg curries on the side, some brinjal pickle and papadams......

all this talking about food is making me hungry.....

Yep, the DFR spent a lot of time researching this to provide good quality food for soldiers fighting over the highest battlefield, Siachen. Just put the satchet in boiling water and you're done.

Those Maggi products and similar are absolutely disgusting, so full of salt, really not a healthy product at all.

This MTR Foods stuff is as good as I have had in a restaurant and as you say Sticky, make a simple base meal and pure the Ready to Eat over the top and its pretty good home cooking. Great for the hurry home and what to eat nights.

I remember in my flatting days, Boil in the Bag Sukiyaki, that was a favourite 30 years ago.

Kohinoor brand of cooked and packaged - ready to eat food is also good.
ITC has a brand called Kitchens of India - and they are the best. But, they are expensive.

Ready to eat (Tasty Bites is what we get here) taste good, when you are not in India. but compared to the real thing, freshly cooked food in India, it will taste yuck.

There's one chicken dish I bought twice in Chennai. Delicious ...but I got sick both times, so that's too much of a coincidence.

The Panner and Dahl dishes keep me going, though, until I get a little more local-cooking know-how.

They do seem quite unlike anything I've seen in UK: like fresh food, but not requiring refridgeration and (apparently) not being full of chemical preservatives.

I indulge myself in this every once i a while . Stuff which might not be possible to cook at home, or as an alternative to ordering in it tends to go well with the lifestyle i lead. Rajma, Palak Paneer, Matar Paneer and Kadhi Pakora are some of the ones i buy regularly..

Kitchens of India , more often than not, is the brand that is purchased.

Yet to buy anything non veg though...dont think it will be able to compete with home cooking..

Yep i am from BCS!!!!!!!! and im the elder one...! and you are???

I honestly dont know about their availability in Shimla. Im pretty sure you would get them on the mall but how much would be available is a different issue. Better bet to pick them up from Chandigarh maybe.....

In terms of them lasting i cant say since we consume it within 1-2 days but im sure 6 months or so from date of manufacture would be min atleast.
