Railway Station Delicacies !

Travelling by the Indian Railways has always a pleasure and a learning experience.

Every railway station / sector has its own specialities. There are loads of people who travel all India by travel, and i think, we must inform people that when in this station, try this without fail.

For eg...if u are in any station in Kerala...always try
1. Pazham puri - which is a hot bajji made of besam flour and has a sweet banana inside it. It tastes yummy.
2. Top it with a sukku tea / ginger tea.

These 2 are best in Kerala

Also, if u in a Baroda railway station, try the Hot jelabis in milk.

Similarly, it is fun to see the efficiency with which the Egg Omellete wala makes his wares. I think he makes 2 sets of bread and omelettes every 3 minutes. Amazing speed. Have you ever tried it ? These omelettes taste yum..and cost just about Rs. 12 or Rs. 15.

So, is there any yummy / special dish that you had in any of the Indian railways canteens or fish carts.....apart from the tea, chaaya and the kaapi that is pronounced in a peculiar nasal accent.

ooOo lovely thread! we should make a sticky for this..I never know what to order at various train stops.

sorry, I can't contribute due to my ignorance of the richness and variety of Indian food.

but Ill be watching this thread closely

p.s. besides the local name of the food, could people provide a description of what it looks like...then at least if I cant pronounce the name correctly, I could identify the goodies..

Ha,

I can add to the list avobe.

Buy at Rajamundry / Vijayawada - Mango Tandri. It is basically mango jelly. They make mango pulp ( out of mango ), put it in layers and dry it in the sun. Then, the dry jelly is cut into pieces and sold.

It tastes yummm..

At Agra - Agre ke Pete is sold in large quanities.

It look likes sugar candy, but, it is made of white pumpkin and sugar. Tastes extremely sweet, not my favourite, but it is Agra speciality.

Which is your favourite Railways Station Foodstall/Restaurant/Eateries considering variety & quality of food, hygeine, ambience etc.

Mine is Comesum in Nagpur Station.
Though the food variety is good, quality & taste is ok and ambience & hygiene is very good.
Food available ranges from South Indian Snacks/Breakfasts (Dosas/Vadas/Idlis/Uttapas/Upama, didnt like their Chutni & Sambhar though), Punjabi Snacks/Breakfasts (Chhola Bhatura/Samosas/Parathas etc) to Semi meals (Puri Bhaji etc) to Thalis, Pulaos and a Good range of desserts with a wide range of pastries to choose from. They even have a range of Chaats/Pani Puri/Dahi wadas etc and coffees.
Comesum has 8 branches - Pune, Kolkata, Old Delhi, Banglore, Nagpur, Agra, Vijaywada & main branch in Nizammuddin.

i dont have a favorite restaurant but i usually enjoy the (clean) food at howrah....

btw, beware of unhygenic and unhealthy food items.....read this recent article from times of india...

I loved a place at Howrah too, it was on the near corner of the 2nd part of Howrah station, inside they done allsorts of food, I’m sure most of it was South Indian, and on the outside (station side) there was a place that done takeaway Hyderabadi Biryani, all the food I had from there was great.

Beware of things that are served in newspaper, my friend got sick after an omelette on Jodhpur station, I was later told that the newspaper can be collected (sometimes off the floor) by a beggar, then given to the vendor in exchange for a meal.

The food in rail stations...

you guys are sure loving Indian food more than usual... (just like me).

That food is not the healthiest or cleanest but I love it, it doesnt make me sick either... practice. ;-)

- the old sodium overload 'vada pao', served on old newspaper with chillies soaked in salt n vinegar. *drooling*
- 'shakarkandi' (beetroot) a type of a yam/root ... roasted over coal with lemon and more salt (Sodium). *more drooling*
- Omelette over white bread, with very mushy ketchup (that I don't use).

Mumbai VT - Vadaa Pav

Howrah - Jhal Muri

Nagpur - you can run out (the train stops for long enough) and buy a botle of IMFL

There are few Indian restaurants here and none of them serves Mughlai Biryani, Chicken 65, Bhel Puri, Paani Puri, Chhole Bhature, Batata Vadaa, Upama, etc. etc.
