Pecans in India?
I didn't see pecans anywhere in India. Are they not used? If I took some to people, do you think they would like them?

No pecans
Growing up in India, I never saw pecans being sold or used in India. Peanuts are used in recipes across the board, and cashews too. Almonds and pistachios were always expensive, and treated as a luxury, but are found in recipes. Walnuts were available more commonly in the north, and were consumed as a snack by those who liked them and could afford them.
Pecans may now be available in premium 'dry fruit stores' in the major cities. If you presented pecans to Indians, I suspect they would be a curiosity and would probably be used for snacking. |

I've tried explaining the delights of pecan pie to my Indian wife, and she seemed more than a little intrigued...
But no, I haven't managed to find pecans in India either! |

I don't think pecans grow in India, so it might be a nice gift. How about those big bags (2 pounds, I think) from Costco!

This website for a trade association for the Southern United States says pecans were first introduced to India at a press conference in January 2006. http://www.susta.org/press/insight_s...6.h tml#india
I guess they're still not readily available there. I think a big bag of them at Costco is about $10-$12. |

A simple job with pecans:
5 sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed * 1 ounce raisins * 1 ounce chopped pecans * 1/4 cup butter, melted * 1/2 cup rose syrup * 1/2 cup water DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). 2. Spread sweet potatoes in a single layer in a 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle with raisins and chopped pecans. 3. In a small bowl, mix the butter, syrup and water. Pour the mixture over potatoes. 4. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven 50 to 60 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender. |

Except for the rosewater, that sounds like a classic American Thanksgiving Dinner dish.

I haven't checked the price since last year, but probably around $12-14. You know what's happened to prices lately. <sigh>
Here's a place that has the really fancy ones: www.sunnylandfarms.com |

I've used the pecan pie recipe and walnuts instead of pecans; it makes a lovely pie. PM me if you need a recipe.
