Mustard oil ?

I just came back from the Indian shop where I noticed for the first time "for external use only" stamped on the back of the mustard seed oil bottle

I've never noticed this and have used it for cooking many times

No problems though

Have I missed something here

Very odd. I found this --- but I could have sworn I remember someone discussing the warning before.

Someone with a memory, like Mach, will be along...

(Or someone who's better at searching than I am)

It may be the information was somewhere else; have you tried googling? (you probably have already).

I think that it probably means it has not passed the relevant tests for human consumption in the country that you are buying it in. My theory, anyway...

Could this be the reason?

Mustard oil, whose production and consumption were until recently integral to India's way of life, has been banned, so as to provide a market for Monsanto's soya oil.

On 27 August 1998, the government of India banned the sale of mustard oil. On 4 September it went further and banned the sale of all unpackaged edible oils.

More states today banned the sale of mustard oil while others mounted intense oil-sample collection drives as the dreaded dropsy claimed three more lives in the national capital since last evening, taking the toll to 22. However, unofficial reports put the toll at 35.

A day after Bihar and West Bengal banned the sale of mustard oil, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Haryana and Assam joined them as the disease, which came to light in Delhi earlier this month, spread to several states.

A Health Ministry release said this evening that the Prevention of Food Adulteration Department staff had lifted 225 samples of mustard oil, of which 117 were tested and 51 of them were found to be positive.

Good bit of detective work; crvlvr.

Pretty depressing result though. I couldn't stand to read past the second page of that first link.

I wonder how come this didn't cause an international stink?

(or maybe I was asleep that year )

Just an example of how corporations can buy (aka lobbying in the US)the Indian govt. With the entry of foreign companies, the stakes just got higher.

I remember posting in a similar thread...the result was that that the oil was as edible as it can get, however due to certain content it cannot be sold as edible in EU.

Haha! Too much honor, sir I remember this one but I don't think it addresses the question: Mustard seed

(ps Never mind, the Capt.'s got it above, that's it.)

That Mustard oil adultration thing is a matter of history now. Packaged Mustard oils are widely used by us for our daily cooking.
When winter comes many Indians have a massage with Mustard oil before taking bath. Moisturisers and body creams have taken over now.
