I'd say not to add water unless you want it really thin: curd goes pretty liquid when beaten.
So, I'm not thought to be too crazy when I order lassi made with NO water? And I might even get same?

You can order Lassi with and without water. I recommend trying both and see for yourself, which one you like better. I have had Lassi in lot's of different places and each one unique to it's own region. The dhaba's on the national highway roads make them thin (w/water) because you can add it to your khidhi if you desire.

No kidding! A tourist was given one but not warned what made it so special, and when I checked into the Pushkar hotel, they were ready to send her to Ajmer for electroshock, because nobody could figure out what was going on with her. I stopped that in a hurry and we took care of her until she came down -- it was pretty awful for her.

I know about bad trips, but... Good you were around. You'd think they should know about that stuff (the hotel owners and folks).

That's a form of rape giving someone drugs without their knowledge. I would have done bodily harm to the people that did that. Or atleast went to the police.

I thought it strange that there was no curd in it! The 'author' is mentioned on the site - Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff

But Thandai is (without bhang/marijuana of course) is considered a more royal, premium and exclusive drink then lassi.

I beleive due to the fact that no everyone can afford a properly made thanday, as the indegriends are costly and difficult to find (as compared to lassi)..

Which ingredients make it expensive (sorry, this is off topic but interesting!)? Here are some recipes, but they don't sound expensive at all ... http://www.holifestival.org/thandai-recipes.html

I am not sure how to explain that !!

okay..when I say thandai is expensive, it does'nt mean literally expensive, it means that its expensive and hard to get commercially as compared to Lassi.

lassi can be easily made at home with easily availabe indegriends at home..suger/salt, ice and curd.

However the number of idegrients used in Thandai is high and process is elaborate..so evrything does add to cost..

Getting back to the topic of lassi - not special lassi, not thandai, just lassi...

I order it always without water and without ice, not for any other reason than to avoid the unknown quality of the water. And, to be honest, I didn't know if it could be made without either - or if what I keep getting IS made without either - but we've been drinking it for years and haven't had any ill effects. In fact, one day when I was not feeling particularly well, the only thing I wanted to put in my stomach was lassi.

This is not drinking Lassi, this is eating curd added with other idegrients like Sugar/salt ..

Curd ius supposed to be too thick if its of good quality, and that is the reason one cannot drink it. That is the reason water is added to reduce the thickness of the curd so that it easily "drinked"..and that is lassi..

I think the problem is more often a more innocent one of mutual misunderstanding: Tourist sees special lassi on the menu, thinking hmmm let me try that, must be an extra-good lassi. Vendor meanwhile thinks it must be understood what is ordered, after all that's what all those pale-faceds come here for. Result: mild discomfort to severe disorientation and paranoia.
