It's Mango time again!

Every year about this time boxes of mangoes appear at my local Asian shop, flown in from Pakistan. I don't see any Indian ones - perhaps they're all eaten inside the country!

A box of 4 cost me about £2.50 (200 rupees) and they are delicious, perfectly ripe, unlike those Brazilian ones they sell in the supermarkets - hard as cricket balls. What do people do with those?

I was wondering what the current price is in India. I guess the mango season varies across the country from North to South but I've never hit it right so far!

Yes AlanD..the market is full of mangoes in Delhi, normally we have 5/6 varieties easily available on all fruit stalls.

The price ranging from Rs. 30 to 50 per kg

You are right India is the largest producer (and consumer as well) of Mangoes with over 1000 varieties and around 60% of the world production.

Delhi also holds International Mengo Festival in July where around 500 varieties are sampled..I plan to visit that and take a few pics...will post them for all.

Hey folks if you feel mango is the king of fruits, 'Alphonso' is the king of mangoes.....,a bit xpensive though. And here the season is a bit getting over.
You can enjoy mangos online too

Yes, the king of mangoes (for some the king of fruits) the Alphonso, is much less available... that too fruits with blackish spots and defects (due to the monsoon rains). My regular mango wallah has delivered Kesar variety (4 days back)cuz he says, "now the Alphonso is not upto the mark".

The Delhi & UP season has just started. You can enjoy the Dussehri. Also the mango festival in Malihabad ( splg ?) is in July. The UP Govt web-site or some trvl Agnt can give the dates.

I would disagree with you about Brazillian mangos. Some varities of mangoes are just not meant for the squeeze test. If you find them hard leave them to ripen for a few days.

Having tasted many Indian varities including Alphonso, Chausa, Dusheri, Gulab Khas, Langra, Neelam, Malika, Pairi, Bombai, Amin Sahai, Rataul and Sehroli, I am of the opinion that the Florida type of mangoes including Haden, Kent, Keitt and Tommy Atkins are the best tasting mangoes in the world. My particular favourite is the Tommy Atkins.

Even friends who have travelled from India to visit me in England agree that the South American mangoes are better tasting than the Indian mangoes which tend to be too sweet.

I've never been in India during mango season and have to make do with an occasional bottle of 'slice' or 'mazza', the thick, pulpy and very sweet prepared mango drinks.

By coincidence though, a flyer from our local grocer just arrived and has Haden mangos from Mexico as a special -- a 10lb box for $6.98 (around $5 US), so I'd better go check them out!

Great! I need a change from cherries. A huge crop this year and two weeks early (climate change?). Anyone want to trade mangoes for cherries? When I was in Victoria last week, small mangos were 99 cents each.... about 32 rupees.

When does fruit get picked in the Kulu valley?

Just a note to Alan, Mangos and Papaya are both considered aphrodisiacs so be careful how much you eat

I buy the dehydrated ones in bulk. Seem to be working okay

Does anyone know what fruit will be in season in India in Dec-Jan? We are going there for the first time, and I can't wait! Are guavas in season then? (my favorite!)

Also, what are custard apples and chicoos? Mum talks about these from her childhood but I have never seen (or tasted) one!
