Is this wise ~

On our first day in India we are going to be near Juhu Beach and since viewing the clips of the street food on offer , I want to taste some of it .

Everything looked clean and the turn over appeared to be fast , but will my soft old european stomach be able to handle it

I'm not on about a full sit plates & plates of it , just a tester for lunch....what do you reckon ?

I guess you need the answer of a fortune teller
Seriously, you can nothing but try and see the result. In general, anything veg is safer than non-veg.

I had a teensy weensy plate of street carrot halwa outside Nehru Place - and for my efforts contracted what must have been an unfortunate case of Nehru Place Belly. The halwa was fairly warm, tasted great yet had me doubled over in pain by sundown. That was three weeks after my inaugural landing & missed three days of work because of. Sometimes ya gotta ask yourself, 'do you feel lucky punk?'. ....

A fortune teller, as federica suggested, may very well be the way to go . . . (as for me though, I'm always all-veg in India, except when my bansuri teacher cooks; but more importantly for me is nothing fried) . . . but I defer to a Jedi Master, Yoda, who said - "Do or do not . . . there is no try." "Do" may very well lead you to The Dark Side . . . but I say "Do" . . . say Yes to India Bon chance!

I wouldn't worry about it, and then those Juhu Beach snacks are famous I believe (... or is that Chowpatty Beach, rather?)

But, like the others said, there are no guarantees...

If you are here for some time, then you are bound to have Delhi belly. So better earlier than later

Be careful, choose a joint which is clean and crowded, less chance of stale items, your European bellies are quite sensitive (not like those in India - 'lakkar hazam, patthar hazam' (able to digest even wood or stone)).

I reckon you may have to risk it...if it looks really good . You can be struck down anywhere at anytime by Dehli belly....I was in Cambodia this year by the cooking oil , well I think it was that .

So hard to travel all that way and not have a little taste of what locals enjoy , but 2 days after I'll be train bound for Delhi ~ what a predicament .

Mwah, yes. One runs into those who will eat just cookies and stuff prior to a lengthy ride. I don't know, that certainly isn't for me, but, well, it could obviously be an approach. (I may also not be the best one to advise, I'm not greatly bothered about food there. So don't follow my lead, & all that.)

Other than that and as noted, you might as well fall ill at some 5-star place, there's really nothing to say about it.

What's handy is to have imodium or a similar anti-diarrhea medicine on you. While, surely enough, some have reported here it doesn't work for them, the one time I've ever used it (in view of a long and complicated ride indeed when I wasn't all well) it firmly clogged me up for about two days or so.

Note imodium et al. shouldn't be used as treatment, you have something in there & it needs to get out. However, for a lenghty ride indeed and when you have the runs, it can be a godsend. If you suspect you have anything more serious than the Belly going on, you should still look into further examination and possible treatment, possibly on arrival then.

And note it is contra-indicated and so shouldn't be used at all with (or in case of suspicion of) certain forms of diarrhea, notably those caused by certain organisms I think (e.g, dysentery). If diarrhea is combined with a fever and/or has blood in it, these medicines should never be used, but medical attention should be sought instead and promptly.

Wow ~

thank you for that Doc

I've always got immodium on me due to the fact I do try the food from wherever I find looking/smelling good . Don't get me wrong I do take precautions , good turn over , clean areas and no fingernails in my padthai....thing is Thailand is so very clean/hygenic as other Asian countries are , Cambodia was somewhat grubby and the whole country needed a good scrub down ~ but it didn't stop me but it should have .

We're going for afternoon tea in the Sea Lounge at the Taj Hotel where they have 'chaat'...this may have to be my first taste of India counting the days now .

Well, one should hope & I would assume that should be safe for starters...

Ah, the excitement! Go have a swell trip!

nb I should add that I think even on my last trip, too, I might have been a little more cautious with my food just upon landing, just because that's what one tends to do. Thing is there was this silly man called Steven_Ber to pick me up & who was at the end of his own several-month trip, so before I knew it we were sipping street sugar cane juice & hanging off buses and stuff. Great, great first day (and many a one after), really.

Never had any intestinal troubles to speak of for my two months of travel after it either. Just my luck, I guess

My Doc says, it takes a minimum of 24 to 48 hours for a major case of food related stomach flu or related infection. Do you know what was the actual diagnoses ?

If you can tell me where else in your soujorns have you eaten what kind of street food, it will give one an idea of your immune system ?

Dirty water hog dawg in Noo Yok ? Satay in BKK ? Roadside Jerk Chicken in Mo'bay ?? Then probably Juhu would be fine.. as long as you dont drink iced water, and eat leafy raw vegetables; plus remember to slurp down hot cuppa chai after that

Sat here thinking about it and do you realise how often I buy fresh fruit from the street carts in Thailand , Malaysia...and nothing . Also the fried goods in china town and deep fried sesame balls by the canal in Pratunam . Have to admit though in Cambodia I didn't , not a thing ~ mainly because I wasn't keen on their food , found it pretty bland . That must have been a good thing

I've been travelling to Thailand 2/3 times a year for a decade and I eat from the street carts everywhere I travel there , so maybe I should do as I do there and use my head then tuck in !
Immodium at the ready , lol
