is that a rock in my rice?
Recently I have grown to looove a rice dish at a local Indian restaurant. This was very exciting for me because Indian food and me have not gotten along previously. To my disapointment, my Indian friend shares that rice may not be the best choice of food in India because it is not always cleaned properly and you can find many small rocks in it. Is he just pulling my leg or should I be concerned?

It is very well possible (has happened to me), but it is possible to find anything in your food anywhere isn't??? I wouldn't worry too much. If anything it would probably a teeny tiny stone....and I wouldn't say the chances are any higher than they are of finding something strange in your dish anywhere else in the world.

Happens all the time
Surely it doesn't only happen in India. Can't imagine going thru India without eating rice for that reason. Don't worry about it. If you are chewing your food properly you'll certainly notice it before you swallow! Besides, chickens eat stones all the time!

the dishwashers in India are used to clean the pots and pans with small stones(which is a very good and eco friendly method)
so many times you can find these small stones in your meal ![]() but everywhere in the world you can find strange things in your food... once I ve eaten a piece of apple cake here in germany.....I found 10 pieces of cut fingernails!!!! once I orderd chicken fried rice in laos.... as a proffesional cook I can tell you to which animals the bones belong to.. well I didn t know .....and for sure it wasn t chicken...... ![]() |

Agree with the above posters that it can happen anywhere!
I once found a small dead cockroach inside a dimsum dumpling at one of the good restaurants here in Yangon !!! Do not worry about these things !

I remember as a child, living in Iran, getting a loaf of bread with an entire lizard baked into the bottom of it.

It can happen anywhere.
In 1970 I broke a tooth on a stone in a bowl of steamed rice -- in a Los Angeles Chinese restaurant. A few years later my lunch guest, the writer Nat Hentoff, found a beetle in his minestrone -- in an Italian restaurant in Manhattan. Worst of all, when I was a young lad I worked in a Taco Tia (now Taco Bell) in Pasadena. A disgruntled employee wee-weed into the taco meat as it was being cooked. He was caught and fired. But how many...? |

Yes, there can be stones in the rice ... and you can break a tooth on them, so chew carefully.

Actually, that is a routine way of increasing profits in the rice trade. Women have to spend a considerable time cleaning the rice as a result. I was told through my contacts that the local mafia manufactures small white rocks for this purpose..

more on rocks
when i was taking cooking classes in kerala i noticed that the instructor always went through the lentils and rice looking for tiny pebbles and advised me to do the same. i never found any BUT i did manage to bite down pretty hard on one in a bag of "bombay mix" (i dont know what it is really called but it is the snack mix with peanuts, noodles, and peas)....

So, you've been lucky! I went to visit someone while in India, and she warned me about one of the dishes her landlady served -- because there were always tiny rocks in the flour or the rice -- whatever it was made of. |
