I tend to disagree. At least outside India its been one of the most pathetic food I have had and it seems to have been very fine tuned for the locals. Nowhere near authentic Indian food.

I found that in India, that some of the food was a bit more bland, probably due to the expecation that I was Western and wouldn't like it spicy, and therefore the spice was toned down. I think perhaps, that the restaurants here cater to people who like Indian food and are seeking out the spices. Again, this is a generalization because I have had both amazing and ghastly food both in India and in Canada.

A good restauranteur wud always cater to the palate of his anticipated clinetele.
Evan the big American fast food chains seduce Indian sensibilities wid their Aloo Ticki burgers and their Samosa in a pizza kinda products - the patented Pizza Mcpuff that sells for 20 rupees.

The best Dal, I've ever had outside India was in a small restaurant in Queenstown, NZ. The best dosa was in Kuala Lumpur.

My local Indian restaurants here in the Washington DC suburbs have a clientel that is 50-90 percent Indian. The food is usually pretty good, occasionally incredible, and it is quite close to the Indian version.

But the best Indian food is typically served by family at home. And as someone said, Chinese food in India is great. I have yet to have bad Chinese in India, but here in the US it has gotten hard where I live to find quality Chinese (all the Chinese restaurant cooks are now Mexicans).
