Plenty in Berkeley - depending on where you are looking. Closer tot the freeway there is Vik's Chaat Corner that's pretty popular, there is a good (though hole in the wall) biryani/korma place on University a block up from San Pablo called Kabana, and another one just another block up called (I think) Naan'n'Curry. Once you get closer to the campus, there are a few - Pasand for South Indian.

Kabana, 1106 University, just east of San Pablo, on the south side of the street. A dive, but delicious.

Not everyone agrees (but most do) -- see:

Kabana Restaurant Berkeley | Yelp

Kabana Restaurant, 1106 University Ave, Berkeley, CA on Yahoo! Local

For something more up-scale, try one of the Khana Peena locations: 1889 Solano Avenue (at the "top" of Solano) or 5316 College Avenue.

Viks if you get there before 5 pm.

Sheesh. Forget Udupi palace. They have slid down hill........

I do highly recommend Viks though...a real experience kind of place. In a warehouse near fancy fourth street: but far enough away to keep the riff raff out.
Bombay chat place. Just off 80 on the University exit. Good dosas, pani puri, channa batura bigger than your head. Super good and super cheap. Don't be put off by the long lines: everybody in the know is going there now. Service is fast, atmosphere is Berkeley at its finest!

Just the same, nothing beats Saravana Bhavan as my personal Bay Area best spot.

I agree ... ate there some years ago when it first opened and liked Kabana very much, and the owner was very hospitable.

Just ate there again a week or two back. It is not as good as it once was, but still good.

Really I don't like any of the others downtown at all. Kind of sad. I can not bring myself to go to Pasand due to their history.

Berkeley- so many places. Vik's is the best of the lot but I also will go to Cafe Raj- bottom of Solano and Khana Peena-top of Solano.
