We saw the Indian wines but didn't try them as they were SO expensive - as was all the wine really, just stuck to the beer. Would like to try them though....

I would say that Indian wines are almost on a par with Canadian ones - at least the reds, I can't imagine any reason to drink white wine. At least they don't have any effing Merlot!

IMO, Grovers La Reserve is best Indian Red and Sula Sauvignon Blanc is best Indian white although I usually stick to Reds.

There are good quality wines available.

India has some good wine yards in karnataka, goa & maharashtra regions.Recently UB group(kingfisher) entered into MOu with one French wine maker. When you are in warmer country like india,go for Reds,as whites are produced in Cooler areas. But I'll suggest go for sparkling wines of India.Marquis De Pampedor is the best,it is made by methode champegnois method & grapes used are Pinnot Noir,Pinnot Munnier & Chardonay, what differs it from Champagne is that its made in India.& if you compare the prise range of these wines with Chillian or other wines, you'll find them Much better.

I understand from my grape growing friends that India produced the best variety of wine in the world in the Mughal period. The best vineyards were in the Western Ghats (maharashtra). But then with the coming of the Europeans the tradition was lost as alcohol was looked down upon as a social drink by the natives.

Any more info on this will be interesting.
