Mirjam, those pictures are not mine. I just got them from the web. But i guess you could use them in a book. Here is the link : for sweets
Even though i don't have a sweet tooth, my personal favourite is the kalakand. Its the best.
Tomi, if i am not wrong the "gummy red-orange glop" you are referrring to could be halwa.

halwa it is

Yes, pagsarv, now that you mention it, Halwa rings a bell. I just looked at the internet site you mention, and the Halwa there looks like what I had in mind.

I must have blocked it because when I think of Halwa, I think of that ground sesame nougat-like sweet from the Near East. This Indian Halwa is nothing like it. It is definitely translucent and fruity.

Even though when I first saw the Halwa it looked like the last thing I wanted to try in the sweet shop, the owner (of the Kumbakonam place I mentioned above) gave me a taste and I was hooked.

What I have never really liked is the plain sweetened ghee. It strikes me as over the top rich and not complex enough.

I once read in a Chinese book that people smell like the pastries they eat and occidentals smell like milk to them. Indians must smell like ghee then!

For good kheer try Karim's restaurant near the Jama Masjid in Old Delhi.

Kullu (formerly known as Sultanpur) is also known for its kheer and we had excellent kheer at the Shobla Hotel and Restaurant in the centre of town.

I've just realised that a lot of Indian sweets owe their origins to the Mughal invasions.

The great Indian milksweet thread.

Notice how some Indians , specially those getting on in years, are slightly overweight and have you wondered why? it's because you haven't discovered indian milksweets yet

This thread is to post your favourite indian milksweets, post brand names if you can remember ...It's not a vote, because as sweets eaters know we have room for 'em ALL (and seconds)....

Shrikand (Amul)
Paal Khoa
Rasagolla (das & co, calcutta),
ras malaai
Tirunalveli halwa(the pumpkin variety)

I also found this thread...every thing that CAN be discusses has ALREADY been., it seems....

one of my favorites is kesari - drool!

another good one, but i don't know its name - when i was in b'lore i had this milky stuff with some type of tiny thread-like noodle in it. it was kind of soupy, but just the right amount of sweetness.

i would trade my chocolate obsession for indian milk sweets ANY DAY!!

oh, oh i also love those cheese balls soaked in butter, syrup, fried, then soaked in butter again, then syrup again, and then probably fried again (more butter and syrup).

i don't know many of the names....

"fat julie" would be my name if i stayed in india too long - would be mighty scary!!!

julie

I like practically all sweets. But I would like a Kulfi after every meal. The best Kulfi (I heard, not tasted.... will def. taste/eat) is purported to be made in Indore.

Just yesterday showed freemanx the pleasures of Kulfi melting slowly in your mouth.
