Which local restaurants would you recommend to anyone passing through your hometown?

Try to give details of type of food, Region food from (if Indian), cost, how to find restaurant.

My favourite local restaurant is called Lahore One Restaurant , to me, it serves the best food I have ever had anywhere in the world, I miss it soooo much when I am in India.

The restaurant is in Whitechapel, East London.

The food is Punjabi; I normal pay about £9:00 - £10:00 (very good for London)

The Karahai Gosht and Roti’s are awesome; Kebab Roll (2 Sheek Kebab’s with salad and a spicy minty sauce rolled up in a Roti) is fabulous; but the best things there are the Chana and the Kheer (though not together).

In an area with many awesome restaurants this place still stands out above the rest.

Very Highly Recommended.

There is only one Indian Resturant and it ain't so hot.

Ask for real chai and they always understand what you want but you end up with a cup of boiling water and a Lipton tea bag.

Perhaps my favorite at the moment is what I call the "el cheapo" meal, all you can eat chinese buffett, the pure American gluttony meal.

Besides the fact that it is filled with all young girls from China, living here illegally (which is a perk in my book), the lunch buffett is $5.99 USD for all you can eat. Most lunch places $5.99 would barely buy you a sandwich.

If there is a heaven and it's filled with Snow Crab Legs than this is the place.

San Francisco:

My favorite restaurant is Hayes Street Grill, where a meal of perfectly-cooked fish will cost you around $40/person. I don't get there very often.

Great inexpensive food:

Chow (two locations: Church at Market St and 9th Avenue north of Golden Gate Park. Great burgers, eclectic menu, wonderful pecan pie. Lunch will cost you $6-$10.

Pakistani food:

Al-Hambra (16th Street between Mission and Valencia). They deliver all afternoon and evening. My order the other night was:
1/2 Tandoori chicken, 1 order Lamb-Spinach Curry, 2 Nan, 2 Rice and a Mango Lassi. Cost $20.59 before tip.

To be fair, San Francisco has an incredible number of small ethnic restaurants and many have very low prices. These are within a mile from my home: At La Rondalla, two can eat lunch for $10, dinner around $18. At Jasmine Tea House, 2 entrees, a free fried rice, and hot & sour soup will set me back around $18. There are Thai, Cambodian and Vietnamese restaurants very close, and only the Vietnamese does not deliver. The No Name Sushi Place (across from Chow on Church St) is very inexpensive and pretty darned good.

The restaurant I often recommend is called Vego and it's close to the central part of Vienna, at the junction of Neubaugasse and Lerchenfelderstrasse (in the 7th District).

The emphasis is on cheap and simple, and the lunchtime "all you can eat" buffet for €6 is great. It's open evenings too, though I prefer the atmosphere at lunchtime - quite a few more old India travellers drop in then. As you might imagine from the name, it's 100% vegetarian.

For cheap & authentic South Indian veg food, I head up to Rasoi in Karangahape Road here in Auckland.... thalis range from about NZ$4 (US$2.50) up (an all you can eat is about NZ$12), huge and yummy masala dosa for NZ$6, and samosas with tamarind chutney are about NZ$1 each. Damn, now I feel hungry. If you're ever in Auckland then check it out. The Hari Krishna restaurant has just moved in to the end of a small arcade just across the road from Rasoi and Sathya in Hobson Street is another South Indian veg reastaurant (they do good idlis).

fully vegetarian unlimited gujarati thali meals at Thakkars on Marine Drive in Mumbai. Bestest!! :-) Even fastidious gujjus swear by Thakkars!! Not the budget meal though....

I am sitting here with my mouth watering,I could do with a indian meal now.
My wife and I often pop into a restaurant nearby in Northolt,Middlesex, called Eastern Eye.On wednesday they have a special Kashmiri Night.For £9.99,you get one starter(mine is prawn purre),One main(jalfrezi chicken),One rice(plain),One nan(garlic nan)one side dish(Bombay aloo)and to finish off a coffee.Service is great and great value on the food.Roll on wednesday.

Which city? SoCal is a country to itself. However, LA proper you can't go wrong at the Clay Oven (branches). Had a roaring meal there Sat night with a slightly Bengalli twist to the Mughlai and Himalayan Blue..

I have a local veg restaurant called Lashmi Vilas, terrific Masala Dosa for $3, they don't serve chai which is a shame. Any night its 90% Indian, 5% ummm, non-Indian?, Anglos? I guess Skippy's will do.

I just got back from my favourite Bengali restaurant. Meraz, Hanbury Street, just off Brick Lane, East London. Chicken curry, rice, dhal, coke and tea for £6.90, which is amazing value for London, and the food is bloody good too.

I can't really recommend a restaurant in Southampton UK as we haven't eaten out in years locally.
