indian food

I haven't had a whole lot but a couple of indian guys I work with have shared and OHHH my goodness, it is good !!!!! I've chased them down for a bite ! So what is good to eat in India? Can you describe what's in it, I would also like to get a book on cooking indian food. Any good recommendations on restaurants in Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and Gwalior?

EDIT NOTE: This thread has been moved to the correct forum.

Yup, Indian food can be very good, but some items may be too hot for some people.
About cookbooks you can get them in Any Bookstore.

Try books by Tarla Dalal, my mom uses those

Indian food is much better in England than in India. India food in Japan is a joke.

you'll be surprised by the different local foods, if you seek them out. Many of the more expensive eateries have the same menu wherever you are in India, so ask wherever you are what the local specialty is.

I agree with you about Japan. I have eaten the absolute worst Indian food there. The UK is not that fantastic either. IMO the best Indian food can only be found in India and no place else.

there are some pretty decent places in Silicon Valley, California, these days. If you're ever in the area, lemme know!

Canada has great Indian food. But London, Birmingham and Salford are easily the best. In India if you are lucky you get good stuff. I prefer mid-range hotels but the food is too hot for me. The Belpouri in Drummond Street is the best

I have heard through some Indian buddies that Silicon V has some good places. The closest I get to Cal is the airport to catch my connecting flight to DFW.

We have loads of places here in HK but I prefer the small unlicenced places that cater only to Indian workers and are run out of peoples homes. There is one in particular called "Butt Food Place" which is run by a Kashmiri guy called Butt. The Biriyani is awesome.

Got to stick up for the standard of 'Indian' food in London.

It is absolutely awesome, there are over 1 million people living in London whose family's originated from the Indian Subcontinent.

There are more 'Indian' restaurants in London than Delhi, so they say (over 1,000).

Most however, are serving the kind of food they think English people will like (Chicken Tikka Massala etc.) tourists will find it difficult to get away from this kind of restaurant, best rule to follow - if more than 50 items on the menu, go somewhere else.

Of the 1,000 restaurants, I would estimate that about 200 of them are run mainly for the Asian community, in areas that are predominantly Asian (Whitechapel, Southall, Wembley, Ilford etc.), most tourists are taken to expensive West End imitations or even worse, the dreaded Brick Lane.

My favourite are the Punjabi restaurants of Whitechapel (Lahore Restaurant, Lahore Kebab House, Tayyabs), the restaurants of Southall are awesome, with a much wider variety, for South Indian or Sri Lankan food Wembley is a the place.

If you live in London and like 'Indian' food, and your not absolutely blown away by the quality of your local restaurant, you’re going to the wrong place.

There is a club in England called The Curry Club (run by Pat Chapman, he organises food tours in India) I lost faith in this club, I went to many of the highly recommended restaurants all over London, I was rarely impressed, they seem to judge a place by how good the service is and other non important things, but to be fair to Pat, he can only go by the recommendation of others.

My favourite restaurant still says to me "what do you want" in a hurried way, they still throw the food onto the table, but one mouthful of the food, and all is forgiven.

I do miss these places when I’m in India, though on my last couple of holidays I started going to places that were busy & popular with locals, I was much less worried what they looked like, and found the food wonderful.

In Delhi there's a nice place called Chor Bizarre ( I think there's also a branch in London?). It's at the Hotel Broadway in Old Delhi. It does Kashmiri and Indian food, It's not the cheapest place to eat but the surroundings are amazing - a vintage car that doubles up as a salad bar ! A four poster bed table, to name just a few things.

How authentic the Kashmiri food is I couldn't say, but as a last night treat it was great!
