Indian food in Malaysia
Just spent a week on holiday in Malaysia, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the Indian food there.
In Georgetown-Penang's Little India, I had great mutton masala dhosai (not sure about the spelling, since I also saw 'tosai'), chapati, mango lassi, and we even found the marzipan-type sweets, exactly the same as we found them in Rajasthan two years ago. Most Indians in Malaysia are Tamil, though I'm not exactly sure how that impacts the food, since I've never been to southern India. Anyway, just this post to tell you that if you can't make it to India, just try the Indian food in Malaysia, it's real! |

I have eaten decent Indian food in Penang, besides Georgetown, too. In that area, Singapore has some good Indian food too, for a wide range of budgets. At the low end, some food courts (Newton, Tanjong Pagar), roadside places at Serangoon (watch for the cockroaches!) at a higher end, one mughlai resteraunt at clark's quay (forget the name), which was amazing.
Though when in Malaysia, Indonesia or Singapore, I like the satay food better. Back to Malaysia.. I had a haircut in Georgetown once, and could have been in an Indian barber shop. Everything was Indian, the blades, shaving creams, shampoos.... the guy told me they get it back from Chennai on trips home! |

I've heard that Georgetown rocks for Indian food, as well as other Asian cuisines!!

Offtopic again...
Georgetown is a pretty interesting place even otherwise. A mix of British and Malaysian ambience, it has its own charm, lanes and by lanes...(try the roasted peanuts with local sauce here.), and is best experienced on foot. Some nice resteraunts, good street food too, and the view of the town from atop Komtar, a high rise shopping mall/bazaar is good. And taking the train to the Hill is a good way to escape when you want some peace and quiet. |
