India's Canteens
I was browsing the web for a biryani recipe and I came across this link: Eight of best canteens in India!
"This one will take you through some canteens of India -- long queues, clattering thalis and stuffy dining halls" sound like fun! looks like I missed out experiencing food on a whole new level in India ![]() Anyone like to share their experiences? whats it like? the food, atmosphere? and is it werid for a non-Indian to rock up to a canteen and eat? |

Very nice site Kanbe, we must open a new "Canteen Gallery" in IM. First probably a Restaurant Gallery, but probably imikers will give dozens of addresses of the best canteens all over India.
This one was in Baliguda (South of Orissa) and was useful because was 05.30 am. and quite cold in the street. |

Mtr
The only canteen I have eaten at (of the ones' mentioned on this site) is MTR Bangalore. No list cannot include MTR. I now buy their mixes for various dishes.
But there is nothing like those local canteens for great food..

MLA canteen in Kashmir was good long ago. My favorite (personal bias) is the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Delhi..

Anyhow I am not too much in favor of these listings as from experience, these have proven to be at par with LP's restaurant listings. ![]() An innocent Diversion

When we were there earlier in the year it cost something like 15Rps for an all you could eat Thali meal, the food just kept coming & coming. In there you sat on benches at long tables, there were no other foreigners & I guess you'd have to be pretty confident about table ettiquette, hands, water etc before you'd venture inside, but if you are then It's an experience not to be missed. Plus after your feast take a look in the kitchens were they're turning out puri's by thehundred with pans, pots & utinsels sized like you couldn't imagine. Take me back,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, |

CEPT university, ahmedabad - a great thali for Rs20, one of the best meals i had, and all veg, curried paneer - yummmm. loved the bureaucracy - first you pay for your ticket, then you get your ticket, then you get your meal. but if you wanted a drink you just went to the window
eating was fairly casual - students just sitting around an open landscaped area. very cool. |
