Any tips, addresses, or recipes for the best of the best naan within India's boundaries?

In North India, you will get good naan in any big city. In the rest of the country, you will have to search a bit.
Naan is not the primary reason people go to a particular resteraunt, they would typically go for the rest of the food or kebabs etc. Naan, like roti or chappati, is a by product, in a manner of speaking. That said, heres a small list: Delhi -the dhaba opposite what used to be Eros Cinema, Jangpura (Om's?) -Punjabi by Nature, Besant Lok -Moti Mahal, Daryaganj (does it still exist, havent been there for sometime) -Bukhara, but at those five star prices, it better be! -Gulati, Pandara Road (again, is it still there?) Lucknow the famous lane in Hazratganj with the kebabs Hyderabad Angeethi Calcutta Amber Kwality, Park Street - |

There is a place in Patel nagar called Gol Hatti...here people only come for Naans..they hardly serve anything else...you are served the Naan and Chhole (Chick Pea) are complimentary...
They have a huge size of naan, you have either have Alu Naan, Paneer Nann, Gobhi OR Alu..even Plain naan is there. Everything is under Rs.30.. Check out this link for details : http://delhi.burrp.com/establishment/view/181752590 |

In Chennai, Naan seems to be only in the non-veg restaurants.
I guess that's because it's cooked in a tandoor, and there's not much call for tandoori chickpea!

There are lots of places where you can have the naan. It would be best to let us know which city are you in / will go.

One thing is for sure - all bread is not created equally and naan is no exception. Very often where you find mouth-watering properly cooked naan - you will have the most tastiest & properly cooked tandoor cuisine. Some of the worst naan/tandoor chicken has been at 5* hotels where the naan has been burnt/bland and the chicken seered on the outside and very raw on the inside ........ ![]() |

I will be in Chandigarh and try those spots out. I used naan for lack of a better word .... but tips on any breads in general would be appreciated. There are so many types of breads with an equal amount of different finishings in India that if you do not ask specifically about them - you may never know what it was that you had. I found the following old article on bread not long ago in the Tribune: "Mir Taqi Mir had a keen eye for detail. Having led a life of near starvation for most of his years, he was most impressed by a feast laid out by the Nawab of Awadh for the British Governor-General. He writes: "As for the types of breads at meal times, (Nan-i-badam) (almond bread) was of utmost delicacy, and Shirmal-i-baqar-khani, topped with saffron colour, would put the sun to shame. Nan-i-javan (youthful bread) was so soft and warm that if an old man were to eat it, he would act like a youth. Nan-i-varaqi (paper bread) was of such a quality that I could fill a whole book" .......read more |

Although I love Naan, I think it is not healthy since it is made from Maida (refined flour) that has really no nutritional value.
I much prefer Paratha (although some may not like the amount of ghee it is cooked with or oil), roomali roti and so forth. Cheers Nattusbs |

Roomali is one of my favourites, paratha is a good breakfast/brunch bread - especially stuffed ..... can be a little heavy at times though - tried the famous mughal kitchen(name ?) in old Delhi and didn't like too much.
Those rather obscure kashmiri breads are very good too. I had one once that was donut shaped - almost a cross between a pastry & bread, only slightly sweetened but garnished with crushed almond, pastachio & poppy seeds ..... don't know the name of it but it sure was tasty!! |
