Simple.

Get a flight to Calcutta and ask a cab driver to take you to one of the following places:

Aminia
Shiraz
Rahmania
Shabir
Haji Saheb

That is if you like an authentic Mughal Biryani that's subtle yet full of flavours.

Thumbs up Biriyani

What a thread!!!!
Aminia, Shiraz, Nizams, Bedwin, Zeeshan is already mentioned by Natasha (where is she?) allow me to add another one – Rahemania.

Aztec , only thanks messages are not enough for your effort. Let me know when you are coming to Kolkata once again. A biriyani treat at Aminia is assured for this great thread.

Somnath bhai, for a change how about you venture South to Hyderabad to taste some real (no offense meant, we Hyderabadis are like that only!) Biryani? Will be there this June.

Yes why is Big Z missing?

Other than the obvious places mentioned in Hyderabad, I also recommend Mohini at Basheerbagh for its Zafran Biryani.

I am surprised Mohini still exists, will try their Zafran Biryani this time, was not there a Moti Mahal somewhere around there which used to have a great tandoori pomfret?

How is Narmada doing? Great biryani, bheja curry, gurda curry, fish fry and a somewhat rough crowd. They almost went broke during the prohibition days.

Hi Shekhar,
Thanks for the call. I had been to Hyderabad in 1996 and it was an 18 days training program. We stayed at Hotel Decan Continental (at Sekenderabad). I can still remember the test of Hyderabadi Biriyani from their cuisine and it was superb . And I am trying to remember the name of another Hotel in Hyderabad where I had Biriyani (it was towards Begampet) …….. Hotel Viceroy (or something like that). Sorry I can’t say that the name is correct but it was a really luxurious and expensive (well, it was from our company’s account) hotel but couldn’t enjoy the Biriyani there (the arrangement, formality, code of behavior was too heavy for just a college pass out ). Ha ha ha…..

Hey Shekhar, no need to be so formal I understand. This is absolutely OK. Biriyani was introduced by the Mughals in India which is changed over the period of time according to the available ingredients and local influence and produced several type of Biriyanis like Kashmiri Biriyani, Hyderabadi Biriyani. Actually, now I am curious and trying to know the history of Hyderabadi Biriyani.
It was mentioned in some other threads that I’ve started my professional life and was trained for the next part of the life from this city. I have special feelings for Hyderabad. Glad to know that you are coming back on June.

Cheers,
Somnath

If anyone is planning to start your journey from Howrah station, don’t forget to try Hyderabadi Biriyani from the restaurant situated at New Complex (South Eastern). I use to pack my meal before the journey. It is good.

now i know that a "Biryani" is not "Biryani" untill its non-vegetarian bu cant help asking for a good place to have vegetarian version of Biryani. My family friend makes excellent vegetarian biryani using Jackfruit.

Can people suggest any good place serving nice, if i may call it so vegetarian "Biryani" in Mumbai, especially.

Sounds interesting jackfruit in the biryani must be giving it an interesting flavour and taste .
Most of the veg biryani i have had are mediocre so can't recommend any place. But I love the navratan palao at shrijis ,oshiwara

Jack fruit Biryanis is pretty close version of authentic non-veg biryani though it is vegetarian.......every other ingridient and way of making is same except that instead of chicken or mutton or any non-veg item marinated jackfruit is used .........marination should have distinct flavour of Saffron...
best when made with Punjabi basmati rice.
yummmmmmy
