I second that.. Yesterday during the IM meetup i was trying so hard to remember this name "Karim's".. Its too gud. As far as I remember they have opened a hotel in Noida Sector-18 market too. They also have this nice spicy afghani chicken dish.. which comes with a sweet banana chatni, that is their speciality.
There is one more of this Mughal style non-veg restaurant chain, which again has its roots in chandni chowk area and now spreading wings. I am not able to remember the name but it has opened a branch in Punjabi bagh in Delhi. (Highly Recommended)

People,

Here is the masterlist.

Bangalore – Samarkand in Commercial Street , Nandini – there are 4 of them , Hyderabad in Koramangala, Biriyani Merchant in Castle Street

Chennai – Usilampatti on LB Road, Ponnuswamy in Ethiraj Salai, Karaikudi on RK Salai, Malgudi in Savera Hotel in RK Salai, Anjappar on Nungambakkam High Road and Banana Leaf in Indira Nagar

Hyderabad - Bawarchi, Paradise, Madeena, Basera, Garden Restaurant (close to Paradise), Niagara , Azizia, Madina (near Charminar - the original), The Nizam Club (in my opinion the 'real deal'), if you can find/persuade a member to take you there. Banjara Darbar and Narmada

A must have after Biryani, Khubani-Ka-Meetha and Paan. A great Hyderabadi tradition

Shoranur railway station

Calicut - Sagar, Lucky

Nagpur - Babbu Ki Biryani, Mominpura

Delhi - Kake Da Dhaba

Royal mughal kitchen is called karim's. This is the restaurant run by the descendants of the Royal cooks of the Mughals. While this lineage might well be alleged, once you eat the food, you will agree that they ‘must’ be he actual royal cooks. The original one is in a bylane, very close to the Jama Masjid. The other one, Dastar Khwan-e-Karim, is in Nizamuddin somewhere near the Durgah.
And, believe it or not, they have a website: http://www.karimhoteldelhi.com/index1.html
so go on, look, eat..i recommend this place to each and all.

Mumbai - Alfa, Andheri West

Nashik - Mazda Cafe, Old Agra Road

Mysore – RRR, Ghandi Square

Calcutta - Aminia, Nizams, Bedwin, Shiraz and Zeeshan.

Indore - Pasha Ki Biriyani - this guy is an Afaghani - His show is located in Anand Bazar. Nafeez - This is amongst the best resturant for Biriyani and Haleem and is l ocated at Saket

Chicago - Gareeb Nawaz on Devon Avenue in Chicago

S'pore - "Andhra curry" in little India

Sunnyvale Downtown - Turmerik

Mtn. Vw. - Shiva's, Amber

Santana Row - Amber.

So, all the content above is a 'cut, copy, paste' from comments that have come in, and is pasted as it it.

Pls. read, and enjoy Biriyani whereever you are.

nice work, lonelyaztec, good one to print out and keep in your pocket while you are traveling... I for one can survive on a Biryani-only menu for days!

Another two cents from me.

The best and the original Biryani is only Mutton Biryani and then the original mughlai cuisine dictates that the meat should have bones and it should be cooked along with the rice (not mixed or added later) - so that the rice gets cooked in the bone marrow - its the bone marrow that adds the distinctive flavour. Original mughlai recipe also advises use of subtle spices and no food colouring. Chicken (and Beef and Fish and Vegetable (yak)) biriyani is a much later invention to satisfy the Indian preferences.
Chicken Biryani gets close to being an oxymoron like "Chicken Roganjosh" that you can order in many UK Curry Houses!

Best Biryani in Kolkata - Aminia, Shabir, Shiraz, Rahmania, Hazi (Behala).

And please add Mirchi-Ka-Salan and Baghar-E-Baingan to go along with the Hyderabad Biryani.

There is one chef who oprates from the Mazar of Matka Pir close to Pragati Maidan. You should place an order by weight one day in advance. Bring your utensil & pick it up next day. One of the great Biriyanis I have ever had.
