Icecreams anyone?

How do IMers feel about indian icecreams?

Personally I have had ice cream in various parts of the country. But I think that the best is churned out by Dinshaws. (Nagpur)

Luckily I get that here in Hyderabad. Soft and Creamy, doesnt get ice particles even if you store it in the freezer for 3 weeks! When you get one of them family packs and scoop the ice-cream out it comes out exactly like you see in the fancy photos and ads !

Apart from that the best ice creams here in Hyderabad are the ones in Havmor @ Ohris. Especially the Havmor Special which is shaped like a castle! That can feed dessert to 10 people for Rs 125 or so!

There is also another new chain called "Melting Moments" which is also good.

I used to love Cadbury's "Dollops" which was available in the 90s - their Strawberry and Black Current flavours were superb, as was their 5-star bar.

I also loved Kwality's Black Forest.

Alas, I'm off ice creams now !

With ice-cream, as with most things in India, you get what you pay for. Some of the expensive stuff is really good, much better than here in Ireland, but in India its only worth touching if it is bought from a shop with lots of customers. Some times it appears to have a white film on the top - a sure sign that it has thawed and refrozen, and is probably a major health hazard !!! I've had that a couple of times, and you know from the first bite that something is seriously wrong. No point trying to get your money back, though.

I only eat ice cream in India for a special treat - it costs more than a full thali in some places. Its not worth trying the little ice-cream on a stick, sold by guys on a bicycle - that stuff has been prepared and stored who-knows-where. I was with 3 other people once, waiting for a bus to the Tirupati temple. We all tried one of those mega-cheap lollies, took one taste, then all threw them out of the window straight away. (I hate dropping litter but what can you do with a melting ice cream? ) The ice cream guy came on the bus to tell us off - seems we didn't do his business much good with other people in the bus queue

Ice Cream or Real Ice Cream.....

I saw a documentary once that theorized that Ice Cream was indiginous to the Himalayan part of what is now Pakistan. Never been to Pakistan but that kulfi with falooda combo that I get in India is about as good as it gets. Throw in a few Gulab Jamun on the side and wash that down with some fresh ground black Mysore Coffee and you got yourself a snack to rival all!

ice cream is generally only something that i indulge in when it's hot. when i was in delhi this year with 45 degree weather, i ate it daily. i looked high and low for some good home made stuff but could not find it where i was so settled for the store bought variety, which was o.k. but not truly satisfying, especially in comparison to my first taste of indian ice cream that i had at a wedding. it was in the shape of a log, yellow, and spiked with pecans. Sinfully yummy!

The very best was at a restaurant on the way to Kanyakumari. It was homemade and delicious. My people apologized as it wasn't manufactured! I didn't want to leave that place. If you want the very best take a small freezer (1-2 quarts) to India and have the dairyman bring his bullocks up to the door and milk them in front of you. 15% butterfat and makes such a great delight...

when I want to treat myself I go to Barista and haev the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. The Ice cream's pretty good and when they're put all together it's a winning combo.

I tried the same thing at corner house in Bangalore and I'm afraid to say I wasn't impressed (sorry ro-anD!). My fiend had told me all about how this chocolate sauce was what made corner house famous and I must admit it looked good. But, on tasting I had to disapoint my host and tell him what I really thought of it (sorry robin)

Anyway, my reccomendation for ice cream is mocha at teh big chill in Delhi - they do other flavours with chunks of toblerone or brownie too. It's pricey though...

The Gourmet shop in Masjid Moth in south Delhi & the Italian restaurant Big Chill in east of Kailash serves fresh home made ice creams, terrific & have real fresh fruits.

The Lake View parlour on M.G. Road in Bangalore makes great Sundaes.

In Mumbai the Parsi Dairy outlets sell the best Kulfi in the world.

Shimla finally you remembered & uttered a sigh too I suppose!
Among the branded stuff I prefer the Movenpick & Baskin Robins. Amul has a threatening presence for Kwality & Vadilal. Mother Dairy in Delhi has lowered the price like anything. Nirula is still going strong in Delhi.

My mouth is watering. It is difficult to resist salivary secretion after hearing the name. I don’t have any choice 4 this. Every time is ice cream time .

In our college days (now also) we preferred Softies, This is very inexpensive and tasty also.

Yes, see my earlier post. I am sure that this occurs when ice cream has been frozen, thawed, and then refrozen again, probably due to poor transportation or power-cuts. Another way to spot this is when the ice cream tastes icy and grainy:

My ice cream tastes icy and grainy. What happened?
This is a condition commonly referred to as "heat shock" or temperature abuse. This occurs when the product is allowed to warm and soften and then is refrozen. When this happens, some of the air whipped into the product escapes. Because this air gives the product its unique texture and flavor, when the product is refrozen, it takes on a harder, icy consistency and the flavor is often affected.

A Google search such as:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...efrozen+hazard

highlights the dangers of re-frozen ice cream.
