Is the degree of heat determined by the dish or the chef? Usually in India you can relay your "heat" tolerance to the chef so that he can create a dish that is as close as possible to your taste preferences. So all these dishes are nice* but the heat factor may rise or fall depending on the restaurant ambient temperature and the type of beveridges available to complement the food.

* Vindaloo is something I've never tried - although I have spent alot of time in Goa. Is this not more prevelent in British-Indian menus these days?

i would say that this is a pretty british-indian set of options...i'm pretty sure that the killer 'phal'is purely an english thing.

That said i like my curries hot enough to make my nose run and give me a buzz but not so hot that it becomes a challenge just to finish it!
I find in some tourist places (particularly mcleodganj) that the food is never hot enough and i have to ask for extra chilli...something i'm always a bit wary of doing

I used to handle hot curries but after eating Subways for 9 years I can't handle jack anymore. One day eating at this spicy place, "Steamers", this white boy put me to shame . I went home put my head in the pillow and cried for hours!!

Yes I admit it, I am Indian and I can't handle curries anymore

Super Duper hot.

Most travelers think my friends and I are nuts because we complain we've never come across a properly hot curry. That's probably because we're grew up eating Indonesian, Malay and Thai food that spice just doesn't get in the way anymore, and if it's not hot enough we don't taste a thing.
