German Bakery

Hi All,

German Bakery ! The very name brings to my mind delicious cakes, breads and doughnuts.

So whats the big deal huh ? Every town and city has a nice bakery, why is monkey boy posting about a bakery ??

Well the thing that surprises me about German Bakery is that you will find a German Bakery in every nook and corner of the Himalayas.

I have seen a German Bakery in Tabo, Kaza, Leh, Manali, Naggar. The surprising questions that come to my mind are

1. Are all these German Bakery franchisees ? or have they been opened by independent people but they are just using the name German Bakery ?

2. How do they manage to bake such delicious stuff so high up in the hills ? I mean I had banana cake from the German Bakery at Kaza and believe me it was one of the best pieces of cake I ever had !!!!!!!!!!!!

The best cake in Kaza ??? Kaza a place where the bread takes two days to reach from Recong Peo !! I know this as we were trailing the Mahindra pickup from Annapurna bakery,Peo for two days !!!

3. How are they able to maintain such a high standard of hygiene and have fresh products ready each day - everyday so high up.

4. Why isn't there a German Bakery in the towns in the plains Chandigarh, Delhi and others ??

Don't know about Chandigarh, but there are several in Delhi.

Very pleased to hear this as I will probably go there very soon.

I read once that it was originally a German (obviously) who founded the first German bakery somewhere in Asia, apparently after realizing that a lot of things he himself and other Westerners liked weren't available. I don't remember if he had the name protected or if he sold his business to someone else after a number of years.

The climate in places like Spiti and Ladakh in summer is not so very different from the climate in Central Europe. I think it is more difficult to get cakes etc. right in places like Mumbai. However, the guy who got this whole thing going many years ago has obviously done a good job. The point is probably to stick to a certain type of dough, which is robust so to speak.

No idea.

You find German bakeries in or near backpacker joints. There is at least one German bakery in Paharganj, and there are several in Udaipur.
