EEK! thanks for the warning, I wouldn't want to be dead within 3 days of arrival in India!! I love lassi.

My (Chinese) aunts won't drink anything colder than room temperature drinks, not even on a hot day or while eating spicy food.

Shashank - thanks for clear explanations - all explained now! Also, Nick, I must be stricter and adhere to all principles as mentioned here in case of something imminent - oh dear!!

Drinking hot chai will cool you in hot weather - it works! Yesterday drinking hot chai outside with friend in nice garden in posh hotel but very hot weather although we were in shadows, after 10 mins. both of us said we felt good and not at all hot and bothered..OT Hotel was Fort Rajwada which neither of us could ever afford to stay in, but we went for ladies' drive and afternoon tea there for an outing. Very pleasant too!

I find that I don't mind at all drinking water that has been in the car and got quite hot.

Not keen on this business of chilling everything anyway. In the hotel I was staying in last week the man went into the storeroom to fetch me an unchilled ginger beer. Everything on display was chilled. I had to teach them not to add ice to my drinks automatically too ---and that is in England in October.

It seemed to happen in UK when people stopped drinking beer so much and transferred to tasteless, weedy-wee lager. Suddenly it had to be served icy-cold --- to ensure that it really tasted of nothing, I suppose! Yes, yes... I know people still drink beer...

The always-say-no-ice rule in India (yes, it is worth sticking to) helps to make sure that drinks are not over cold.

But... when making fruit juice in my own house I do add ice --- but by the time it is crushed with the fruit in the machine it is melted and just makes the drink cool, not icy.

If you are referring to juices here, then I hope you know the bigger logic !!

Aisha, is that hotel in Jaisalmer? I'm going there in mid December and would love to see some "other" nice hotels, other than the one I will be staying at.

Back to the hot/warm tea business. I was told by the elders that hot drinks help open your pores and let you sweat (in a nice way), so that would cool your body surface down. Same theory as eating spicy chilli peppers, I guess.

It's on the outskirts of Jaisalmer just as you come in on the main road from Jodhpur - other good ones to go to for enjoying their gardens and have morning or afternoon tea, even dinner if you liked etc. are Rang Mahal, Heritage Inn and Gorbandh all in the opposite direction on the main road to Sam. We often go to Heritage - it is slightly cheaper than the others - for dinner when we want mutton or chicken korma - it is a fiddly dish to prepare oneself and they make it superbly! Rang Mahal has a wonderful swimming pool area, spotlessly clean and you can go swimming there including one cold drink for 170 rupees.
