Paniphal?
Didn't see anybody mentioning "Paniphal" (I may have missed it if
somebody did in one of the many pages. If so, sorry for repeating). It is a common fruit in Bengal. It grows in water ("pani" means water, "phal" is fruit). It is also called "Singara". Here is a link (the one under "Strange fruit"). http://www.ultrabrown.com/posts/strange-fruit The fruit is green. The flesh is white. It tests mildly sweet and nice, when tender; starchy when mature (in fact flour is made out of mature fruits, I heard). |

Another fruit I didn't notice is the "Nashpati"
(Asean Pear?). Here is a picture. http://www.uttarakhand.ws/v/photos/nashpati.html And here is "Pomelo" http://www.flickr.com/photos/hgmphotos/2852280850/ And here are a couple of fruits I don't know the English names of, and no pictures, unfortunately (may be the Bengali members could help): "Amra" (a tart fruit), and "Biliti Amra" (sweet and sour). |

Great Post Girkoo. Very informative.. We grow Rambutan and mangosteen in our orchard in Kerala. You gave me a big list to investigate.
