| I am sure, you start a controversy. Based on home food of only southern states, Taste of food according to my taste puds, 1. Kerala 2. Tamilnadu 3. Andhra. Availability of food, common, it is a place where 110 crore people are living. No scarcity if you have money!!!! |

It is for sure that south indian food will taste better to a soth indian person. I am a bangali and I like the bangali dishes best. My point is not that. My poit is to chronologically categorize the states of india on the basis of different vareity of food availability. Does Kerala offeres better vareity than Delhi? I am talking about that.

| In north india, i have eaten only in restaurant. So, not a good source to predict something. As far as tamilnadu, there are lot of varieties which is only made in houses. I believe the same for all other states as well. Lets wait, some one will come up with lot of experiences around all states. |

The best food I've ever eaten was in houses in Almora District in what used to be Uttar Pradesh. But Keralan food, being very fresh with lots of seafood is high on my list. Best restaurant I've ever eaten in is in Hong Kong, The Viceroy. That was in the 90's, and, don't know how it is today.

| Every state has its unique and authentic cuisine and as a foodie I love all sorts of food. If I am to say where I ate the best food through out my travel I would say Kashmir. I spent a week in Kashmir and each meal dished out by the owner of the house boat and some restaurants that we went to was fantastic. Today we are going to Kashmir festival at CV mess in Janpath to do some shopping and have lunch cooked by a group of Wazas from Kashmir. |

| I certainly couldn't give a top 10 list, and any list would only be to that person's preferences. But If I had to choose my favourites..... Non-Veg = Andhra Veg = Gujarat Fish = southern (coastal) Karnataka & Kerala Sweets = West Bengal Breakfast variety = Kerala Rice = Andhra Breads = Delhi & Punjab Thali = Tamil Nadu Variety of choice = Mumbai & Delhi |

My favorite (other than Andhra) 01. Tamil Nadu (Chettinadu....) 02. Maharashtra (Mumbai, Kolhapur, Konkan....) 03. Delhi (NCR) 04. Punjab (Amritsari macchi, Rajma chawal...) 05. Karnataka (Uppitu, kesri.....) 06. Kerala (Don't let the hype about coconut oil discourage you) 07. Bengal ( I have vague memories from 1979, that may be a reason.. I did cook Jyoti da's Dhoi Machh recently.. but not everyone likes my cooking.) 08. TBA 09. TBA 10. Gujarat (too sweet. )

| i feel the real indian food is vegetarian dishes like palak paneer, malai kofta, dal makhani/tadka etc etc. to be had with rumali roti or naan or paratha. finished with papad, and dahi/lassi. aside of that there are great non-veg food too, like biriyani and kababs and chicken do piyazi etc, but they all have their origins in central asia. about only indian-origin non veg items are fish dishes from bengalorrissa and from goa-kerela. i dont like south indian food, but i like south indian snacks - vada, dahi vada, dosa, uttapam etc. |

| Mod Note: This thread has been moved out of Rajasthan Forum into Indian Cooking and Cuisine I have to agree with the first part of Jyotiji's first post here - I think all States have good food, but within them you can get to experience both the best and the worst of the food there! For all the States I have travelled in this has been what I have experienced. So if you seemed to only have bad food in your travels in one state you might say that one doesn't make the list - however hidden away can be gems providing some of the best taste you will ever have. The top 10 - is an impossible list I think!

| Cronologically? Do you mean which state was the first to have food?
