food problems

Ok everyone i need some advice...i have been i India nearly 2 months and the novelty of eating in restaurants every day etc is really wearig off. Actually I really miss making my own food, choosing EXACTLY what i want to eat. How its cooked, what goes into it and so on....How do other people who have travelled long term deal with this ?? I have another 4 months to go....i dont want to give up eating !

Apart from a place with your own kitchen there's not much you can do...

Make friends with the owner of the restaurant and they might let you have a crack at cooking your own food in their kitchen - could take a while though :P

Or go buy a bowl, a knife and a bunch of fruits or vegies, you can make your own salads at least! And just eating fresh fruits and veg was a nice novelty in itself

Send a message via Yahoo to Darmabum
Maybe have someone back home send you a multi-fuel stove and fuel bottle . . . the ones that burn kerosene, white gas, etc . . . I'm thinking of bringing one on my next trip.

I guess you just have to surrender to the fact that you'll probably end up eating a peck of dirt ...... or ten and even the odd mouse dropping and just don't worry - be happy! Just chalk it up to the ol' Ma India experience and remember that old saying: "What doesn't kill ya makes you ten times stronger"!

Know what you mean. I've just recommenced cooking after about a year
If you go to small local eateries, you'll get something nearer to home cooking That's about all you can do other than go to friends' houses and help them.

maybe if you settled down for a few weeks.......

It is not impossible to find places to stay with kitchens - there's a church in Diu (the one a few kilometers from Diu town) and some apartment style set-ups in Mcleod Ganj that spring to mind. Maybe some of the IMers will invite you over if you cook for them. I've been cooking some at a friend's house and know exactly what you mean. Good luck.

one thing you can do,Is find if there are cooking courses and take a couple of thoughs and that might be enough of a change of pace.

All good advice thanks everyone...i think i am also going to try pleading with the resturant staff to make me something 'special'....this worked for me previously....but it was towards the end of a 3 week stint in one place where i had built up a small relationiship with the staff...
Making my own is a great idea...i think i have no chance of getting in the kitchen....okay thanks again kiss kiss !
