if you cant enter hindi kitchens maybe try some muslim kitchens
where as far as I know it s allowed to enter without problems... that s how I learned to do some turkish and egyptian cooking... last year I met a fine tibetan teaching me how to make momos, chang and many other tibetan recipes.. in exchange i teached him to make spätzle, kartoffelpfannkuchen mit apfelmus, some sort of sauerbraten mit knödel and some other things more.. it looks like there a quite a few germans around in this forum... maybe somebody knows such a forum for germanspeaking people? or maybe somebody wants to open one...? guten appetit to everyone!!! |

Anyway Claudia,
To partially answer your question about cooking classes, there really isn't many places that have a one or two day crash course. Haritha who is a member here runs Haritha Farms has week long cooking classes which vary from season to season. For what you are looking for the best thing I could suggest would be Dharamsala. There are a few private teachers there who would be able to give you a crash course on different regions of cooking. Most of the courses are just advertised on notice boards around the town. Khana Nirvana Cafe is also a good place in town to get info on this too. I was going to suggest checking the local community paper there, which is Contact Magazine however their website seems to be offline now. Hope this helps some. Mike |

If you are interested in travelling to Kerala, there are a few places where they provide professional classes in cooking. Kerala cuisine is something that you should try out. Sanil |

I saw cooking classes offered in Udaipur, I think they were three days and fairly structured. Should be easy to find if you end up there.
I didn't take them (though I do regret it) but I did talk to several people who were very enthusiastic about what they learned. They got photocopies of the recipies too, which is a good idea. Sorry, don't have a name or exactly where they were offered... |

Cooking Course
Anyone know where I could take an Indian cooking course. I don't have any specific area or location in mind, so any locations would be helpful.
Loving the Indian food, Thanks, ![]() |

All this talk of Indian cookery is making me hungry. I may have to go to my local takeaway 'The Masala Pot' after work!
Sorry, Nerrehs - I'm not any help in answering your question, though it's something I'd be interested in too so I hope someone replies!! |

Guys you don't have to be in India to take an Indian cookery course. In GB, (I'm presuming scotland too mercedes10) I've often seen them offered as night school courses, worth checking out who runs them in your area.
Don't know about in Canada though Nerrehs, perhaps not quite as popular as here in the uk. Failing that you wouldn't go far wrong with a couple of good recipe books. Chicken Tandoori for me tonight (uk style) I'll try and get it up on 'Dish of the Day' later |

I dont know about everywhere in Canada, but here in Ottawa, Algonquin College offers summer courses in Indian cooking and since we offer it, I would assume that other larger cities in Canada would. Even in my home town of 56000 people, there was an indian cooking class. Most cities send out a summer activities booklet of courses available for all ages, if your city has one of those, thatd be the first place to look.

My friend in Delhi has been teaching cooking to the Japanese community for years, but she has also taught me a lot of things, too. If you are interested, please PM me and I can give you more details.

While I was in India I became good friends with my Indian assistant. I ate many delicious meals at her home and sometimes watched her cook. I watched and learned as she cooked and slowly she just began to teach me. It was a great experience because I got to taste the results immediately. I shared some of my recipes with her family also.
I recommend you make good Indian friends there and they will invite you home to meals. Ask if you can arrive early to watch them cook and help them with kitchen duties like chopping etc. It is a great authentic way to learn. I bought a few cookbooks also. Take a notepad with you and write down what she does. Better still, take photos to make your own cookbook. Good luck, |
