you can stay at a real coffee plantation:
www.naturenirvana.com

they are really sweet people, and beautiful area. they serve their own outstanding coffee- it packs quite a punch!

don't worry about the sad state of caffeine in much of India - you'll be wide awake with amazement anyway, since it's your first trip !!!

What a fantastic place, Bijapuri! I see it's in Karnataka - I checked it out because quite a while ago I stayed on a tea plantation out of Ooty belonging to a man who owned a coffee plantation in Coorg. He was selling all his tea plantations and concentrating on the coffee one only. Thought it might be his...
Xyka - I'm interested in the blending of coffee with chicory. I sometimes buy packs of this from Cafe Coffee Day - it is not expensive - and the flavour is quite pleasant. I know chicory is good for health (they used to use it as a coffee substitute in lean times in NZ) - is it for flavour that it is added or as a bulking up to make coffee price cheaper?

At the risk of starting an incident - would have to agree with you on that one Aishah. Still - Starbucks is better than instant! If you're looking for an expresso machine here in Delhi then I know just the place you should go to! Nothing fancy - just solid commercial brands.

The only Starbuck's I have tried have been in NZ and Australia - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and Sydney. All were flavourless capuccinos until I asked for the extra espresso bit. So maybe they have this formula to save money - less coffee in the basic orders. But yes, better than Nescafe. Thanks for tip re espresso machines - will get in touch BB!

In all of South India, you can generally get good coffee at the darshinis (stand-up restaurants) if you ask for "strong coffee". They'll put a little more coffee in with the milk. It'll still be as sweet as ice-cream, but a little darker and very flavorful.

As for the espresso-type places, Cafe Coffee Day is to be avoided. I really don't like their coffee. Kalmane Coffee (their Cantata beans are the freshest) is the best to my tastes, and Barista is a close second, though they cheat by using Italian coffee beans -- what's the point.

MTR suggested above is good, but not worth the hassle of going there and waiting in line forever to eat lunch.

In Delhi, visit the United Coffee House (whats in a name) on Connaught cirle. Order a cona-coffee, enjoy good coffee in a nice place. I think this is the only place in Delhi where I always go when i am in the city.

Khan Market also has a no. of coffee cafes or restaurants with espresso machines and making good coffee - I have to say I prefer this type of coffee to Cona coffee which is basically a drip filter then stored on a heated pad.

So, if you're now talking about coffee shops instead of coffee, then the "India Coffee House" on MG road can hardly be beat.

I will eventually post some photos of that place. I'm sure there are some on flickr already.

It is a time-warp back to 1940. And the waiter's clothes haven't been washed since then. Check out the dirt and grime on the light-switches. I shudder to think what the kitchen looks like, but that doesn't stop me from ordering eggs, toast and coffee anytime I'm within striking distance of the place.

One of my favorite places in Bangalore.

One in Delhi as well, Mudpuppy, and it's on that Coffeehouses in Delhi thread! I haven't been there, but could be on a par with yours!

Although I'm not a big fan of their coffees - the beauty of a Starbucks (et al) type shop - is the layout. A place to drink coffee must not be to dark & dungy but have just the right ambient light, amble leg room, a level sturdy table to to spread a newspaper or have a comfortable chat with plenty of elbow room, & just a hint of non-invasive background music to inspire the mind.... and if it doesn't have that then I'll have my coffee in the comfort of my home & save some 'bucks' - thank you!

Now that I would have to agree with, Peak XV. Whilst I don't like their coffee (unless with aforementioned additives) the ambience and furniture is great! Cafe Coffee Day has too loud music which is why I like Costa's in Delhi better - excellent coffee, quieter, comfy furniture - and another one is Angels in my Kitchen in Defence Colony. Barista's looks good but again often loud music.
