Coffee beans in India

I’m a coffee drinker. I do like a nice chai, but coffee is my real weakness. I’ve had some trouble finding bean coffee in Bangalore. I usually only find ground coffee in the store. I was able to find Mysore Nuggets at the Cosmos mall in Whitefield. Given that Karnataka is a big coffee producer, I’d have expected bean coffee to be more readily available. Am I just looking in the wrong places?

Also, is Mysore Nuggets simply a generic term for the coffee of Karnataka?

Lots of bean types in South India. Monsoon Malabar, Peaberry, Plantation A & B, Mysore Nugget Extra Bold and the exclusive Robusta Kapi Royal to name a few. You should be able to buy these, or variations there of, at any decent Coffee retailer. If you can't locate one - you might ask (where do you buy your beans?) at any deluxe hotel, cafe or restaurant where they serve premium filter coffee that has a good reputation or that you've previously tasted & enjoyed - they'll be happy to assist you.

..... that's how I eventually tracked down my coffee roasters/caffeine pushers!!

Indian Coffee Beans

Been yakking a bit about coffee in another thread and thought I'd ask the whole forum. I'm a coffee freak; I love roasting, grinding, and brewing. I was told there are really good beans to be had in India, but the two I've tried so far were a little disappointing. Both were robustas and I'm assuming India is known more for Arabica beans, yeah?. Also, I wasn't roasting them myself and both were far too over-roasted -- both were really dark and oily.

Does anyone here order from a particular plantation?

I drink Peaberry "A" Estate from Karnataka. I buy it locally already roasted, whole or ground for 320/- per kilo. As you're "in" to coffee", I'm sure you'll be able to source it green. I did a quick Google and came up with http://www.coffeereview.com/index.cfm

Quality Coffee Regions in India - is a very descriptive article on the subject. At the end of the page is contact information for the Author/Expert, Sunalini N. Menon. I'm sure she would be more than happy in providing further information/thoughts for those coffee connoisseurs looking for the 'purest & greenest' bean transactions from these estates. Enjoy!

Thanks folks -- I'll check out those sites. Now if only I can find a relatively inexpensive, one-cup roaster...

In Mumbai, I buy Philips Highlander which is a superior quality Peaberry bean, and get it ground half coarse and half fine, then mix the two for best flavour. You can only get these pre roasted here, so I dont know about where you can buy a roaster. Some people roast in a kadai type vessel. In Karnataka, you would for sure be able to get unroasted beans.

Yeah, there's a coffee bean store in Koti that has a nice selection. I'll have to get the name of it from somebody -- was a funny name. It's a really old store and smells great!

Hi even i am a coffe freak,
I feel arabica tastes better to me than robusta, Here in bangalore their in outlet of kalmane coffee plantation. They sell pure robusta beans. I tried them with mixing 30% chicory, mixed with 20% of bru instant and 5% sugar for my filter coffee. It will give you the taste of coffee and the bitterness of chicory.

hey kumar -- i dont' take sugar with my coffee but that sounds like a great mix.

here's a really good trick if your beans are a little too dark (and thus a tad oily): if you use a drip coffee machine, put fresh egg shells (two or three eggs worth) on top of the ground coffee. you won't believe how smooth the java comes out.

Definitely then, unless you are total vegetarian, put some egg shells on top the coffee before you brew it. You have to use quite a few, but you'll be pleasantly surprised.
