Buying Indian Food On-Line in the US
Sorry, I know this isn't a travel question, but am hoping that some of you can help ... someone who would rather be in India.
I recently moved (temporarily) from Silicon Valley to the corn fields of south western Ohio. I'm about an hour north of Dayton. I shipped my collection of dal, masala, basmati, 115 cookbooks, idli steamer, tawa, etc. However, I am now starting to run out of food ... and it isn't easy to find fresh herbs, besan flour, chapati flour, on-line and in stock. I can find some work arounds, but sometimes there are no substitutions. AND, I could drive to Dayton ... but reaching the stores will actually require about 3 hours of driving, round trip, ... plus shopping and the possibility that I may encounter snow or ice or lousy driving weather. First, I'm looking for a reliable ON-LINE Indian grocery store in the US. Namaste.com is out of almost everything that I was looking for last week. I did order a few things from them ... but they have yet to arrive. I ordered as much as I could from ... indianfoods.com ... but they have a limited selection. HOWEVER, their order did arrive within a week ... sans the papadams. Do any of you enlightened souls have other on-line resources? Also ... I'm looking for seeds / cuttings to grow curry and neem. I'm pretty sure that I can find corriander and mint. I can put together a grow-light in the basement ... Thank you, in advance, for your help. Becky |

Can't imagine the culture shock of moving from Silicon Valley to Ohio -- you are a brave woman, Becky!
Can't one of your pals in Silicon Valley go to a local Indian grocery and send you some goodies by UPS? For herb seeds, get a catalog from Burpee's and you can get the basic (coriander/cilantro, mint, basil, sesame...) from them -- but first check your local hardware store. It's the time when folks will be starting seeds for planting outdoors when the ground thaws. Here in San Francisco, we have seeds for all sorts of Chinese and SE Asian veggies, but I've never seen neem (I thought it was a tree) or curry.

Culture shock??? You can't imagine. I'm in the middle of corn, soy bean and winter wheat fields 25 minutes to the closest (other than mom and pop) grocery store. It takes at least a 40 minute drive to get eggplant ... if they have them in stock and if there isn't ice on the roads. The culture shock is worse than my first trip to India ... at least that was exotic ... nothing exotic about this part of Ohio.
Yes, of course, I can get friends to ship things from Silicon Valley ... but am trying to be as self-sufficient as possible and use them out of desperation. I'm sure I can find most of the seeds on-line ... however, they don't have much selection of seeds in the stores yet. Thanks for your ideas. |
