Brick Lane Restaurant London
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...2/IMG_0298.jpg
This is one of my favourite restaurants in Brick Lane, London it's quite basic but the food is yummy, the karai ghost is one of my favourites. I often pop down there for lunch and usually spend no more than £5-6 on rice, meat dish, small side dish subji/dal etc I find that is plenty...no wonder I'm not losing any weight. The staff are very friendly and I also must mention the carrot halva makes a great desert! It's nor far from London Liv St station or Algate Stn...give it a visit if you're in the area! |

I've never been a fan of Brick Lane (and I’ve had maybe 12 meals in different places in the last 5 years), especially as there are so many great places nearby.
Have a look at the following thread. Hometown Restaurant Recommendations. I'm not sure if I've added the details of Tayyabs restaurant to the thread (if not, check out the 'London meet-up' thread. Tayyabs is at the back of the East London mosque in Fieldgate Street (I think), very highly recommended, also Lahore Kebab House, years and years of excellence. Both will cost you about £10, but don't even think of going to either on a Friday night, the queues are too long.

Steve...I know exactly what you mean about Brick Lane...I have had many bad meals down there in some of the 'posher' restaurants...Sweet & Spicy is very convenient for me though, always good food and full of locals
Lahore Kebab House Umberston St ...now you're talking, a local Asian grocer I have become friendly with told me I must go there...I did and had the most delicious dal gohst with a few roti it was indeed pukka, lucky I don't work too close to there as I would be fat as butter! As for Tayyabs yet to try it but I will do...thanks |

Busy with City folk weekday lunchtimes. They're the oldest Indian restaurant in London (1939) ![]()

The restaurant is still there, though it's had at least one change of name in the last few years. (I can't remember the name it uses now) I went a couple of times a few years ago, they had brought in a chef from one of the 5-star restaurants in Delhi (or Mumbai) and had a very good write-up in the local paper. I wasn't disappointed, the food was awesome and I'd highly recommend the place, I have only 2 slight reservations: - 1, The overall feel of the place is of a high quality, (relaxed with great service), but sterile atmosphere, great for most people, but a bit dull for me (I still love the 'throw it on your table' atmosphere of my favourite places). 2, The £20 - 25 a head cost doesn't get you food that is a lot better than other places nearby that charge half the price (Tayyabs, Lahore Kebeb House, Lahore Restaurant and others). With regard to the 2nd point, it's not really fair, the places are all excellent, but it's like comparing a good sit down restaurant in India with a roadside Dhabba (sp.), and I'll always be a Dhabba kind of person. |

Forgive me and correct me if I am wrong (especially as I am posting from Adelaide), but isn't Brick Lane one of the dodgier areas of the East End?
There is no way way I would want to go there outside daylight hours. I always thought that Drummond Street (Euston) was a better area for curry houses or up in Southall or Wembley. On an international travel site I would be cautious about advising travellers to go out of their way to use a restaurant in Brick Lane. Anyway what is this thread doing on the India travel pages. Are you going to move it Steve to the off-topic area or do you think there is enough interest here to maintain general interest? |

Most of the East End has seen gentrification over the last decade or so, and although it still gets dogdgier the further east you move, it's overall a very safe and convenient area to be. Quote:

Anyone tried 'raavi kababs' near Euston? The food is heaven, espacially the seekh kababs, probably matched only by those from Delhi Jama masjid area...

It's a hugely cleaned up area now. It gets massive amounts of business from nearby City folk, and the restaurants have evolved from 1970's velvet wallpaper to ones adorned with contemporary art and modern lighting and furniture.
