Garlic is the food of the gods. I just don't like that stinky sock spice, aka black salt.

We have a national park here in the U.S. called Yellowstone. It has many geisers, all of them with a VERY STRONG smell of sulfur... so strong that you want to vomit if you get a good whiff. (Do a Google serch on Yellowstone National Park.) It smells exactly like thousands of eggs boiling. That is how black salt smells, only not as strong.

On our drive to Pondicherry from Chennai, there was a salt "harvesting"?? field/area. I'm not sure what it's called. There were HUGE piles of salt. Can I assume it was black salt? If I could figure out how to put a picture on this site, I would post a couple for you.

piles of salt

Those piles of salt are made in SALINAS. The English often call them salt pans. The process is, flood the salinas with sea (salt) water, let it evaporate, flood it again, evaporate ,flood etc etc, until you have maybe a 2 inch thick layer of salt.
Then it is collected. Raked into small heaps so as to further drain off excess water. It may also interest you to know that the careful removal of the top quarter inch of the salt crust is known as flowers of salt, and this is very rich in minerals.

the smell always reminded me of someone passing wind. Although I hated the smell,I loved it sprinkled on chilled watermelon.

Black salt has high sulphur content.

That is where the smell comes from. A smell of Eggs, or more exactly, hard boiled egg yolk.

Similar to Marsh gas, which has a typical smell of rotten eggs. That is Hydrogen Sulfide.

Black Salt

If you crave black salt, you have to try Hawaban Harde! It's this Ayurvedic upset-tummy settler, that looks like rat turds, smells like farts, but tastes awesome! It contains black salt, which explains the smell. It is also quite addictive - my bother and cousins can't put the Harde bottle down.

If you are looking for a loud and pungent belch, add a pinch of Black salt in Coke or Pepsi... masala coke, so they call it here!!

Caution: Beware of the fizzy fountain during mixing, maintain safe distance...minimum two feet, I run two miles away though !
