Best Meal In India?
Hey Guyz n Grurlz.
Where did you get the best Meal in india? What was the place? what was the view? What made the meal so good? IŽll start of... 1. Some Organic Veg. place in Rishekesh. Story: I had just done the Vipassana meditation in Dehradun (ten days no speach/no sweets and not so much food) Just before the meditation I had been in Pushkar eating bufes like a pig sort of (all that you can stuff your face with) like every night , and all I could think of during the ten days of meditation was food... I was planing the meal I was going to consume once I stoped beeing behind bars again... So well to make a long story short I got out and found this wondefull organic sesonall foodplace on a rooftop in rishekesh (on the far side of the Ghanges/edge of town sort of thing...) And I got some veggy stuff and some lassies and some juice and some khir for dessert and I had myself a smoke or two and some coffie etc, etc... and loved it all so much more... |

mine is in Rishikesh also. not Delhi's Bukhara, not Lebanese resto with belly-dancing, not even Saravana Bhavan... Topiwallah in Rishikesh, near Swarg Ashram area, for lunch and dinner, esp papaya lassi (heaven), and my hotel (Raj palace?) for their cheese cutlets for breakfast. all meals in Rishikesh that weekend that i stayed there were my best meals taken in India.

Mine was in hampi bazaar.
I can't remember the name (I don't even know if there was a name). It is opposite to the one with the big big advertising-sign: "highly recommended by lonely planet"... It is very small, only two tables outsight and cooking was done by woman. Best palak paneer ever! Very spicy! Lots of flies or moskitos around the empty limca and thumbs up-bottles... ![]() And when I was there (in 2001), everynight a sadhu (or holy man) came to get some food. ahhh I wish I would there... and not in my warm and sticky non-aircon office... ![]() |

I can't remember when it was, where it was, or what it was,
But you can bet your bottom rupee that it was in the 70's, in India, and was the first meal that I'd had for a few of days,,,,,,,, That's the one that's always best,,,,,,,, |

Ofcours home.
And incase of restaurants. CRAB KEY restaurant at the Anjune beach has been the bestest I have tried in India. Those crabs can bring enough water in my mouth to launch a ship....

Bacon roll for breakfast on the terrace at Keventers, Darjeeling, after a night on the beer in Joeys Pub. The view was of the Singalila Ridge and Kanchenchunga.

Yeah Iain I've got fond memories of both those places (the Kalimpong cheese is scrumptious as well)
The best meal I have had in recent memory is the Thali I had at a little restaurant just inside the main gate at Kumbhalgargh, sabji, channa masala, rice, home made pickle, roti to die for and it was enough to feed a barracks!! Most of my fav meals have turned up in the most obscure places, when we stopped with the bus at a Dhaba, or at a restaurant on a day trip. VV I'm glad to hear the food in Rishikesh has improved because it was top of my list for Bad food!! |

I've been there! And you're right - it's ace! It was so good that I had lunch there nearly every day for a fortnight. They do a totally brilliant Masala Dhosa there, too, with extra-fiery coconut chutney and all-you-can-eat servings of sambar. Mmmmm ... ![]() I was there during the Car Festival so there were lots of sadhu's popping in while I was there, too.

Yeah Hampi is one of them places where I got in to some of the Indian dishes in the first place Like the Palak Paneer (UNREAL!) on the far side of the river (a nice place with smalls white huts and mainly me and the Israeli crowd (I was sort of dating someone you see) And then earlyer on I had the Malai Kofta for the first time there (AMAZING) on the Other side of the river. I had it on the roftop of my place (whatever the name might have been) and I was playing loads of chess with the owner course buisness was kind of slow and I didnt have no friends or something and I ended up having That (the MALAI kofta that is) instead of "real" breakfast in the mornings... Then one time I won a chess game and the friendship just got strange after that so I moved over to the chillout side of the river... Miss that place, allthough its a bit weird there... Another nice place there is the "Mango or Papaya" something by the river, (the place with the tre swing) it has good vibes pretty girls and good thali. Its all good.

Second time I've been talking about it lately, but Orchard Hut (near Chamba) was the best food I had while I was in India.
Tons of dishes, the most memorable are Saag Metthi? (made from watercress or nettles or something - we never crossed the language barrier there), a sweetly savoury curry with fruits in it, and the best potato and carrot paranthas EVER. And really great carrot halwa! And nasturtium tempura (sort of). I could keep going forever it seems ![]() |

1. Home
2. Raipur: old raipur, there is/was a student mess run by a sadhu and he used to make excellent rotis in the open clay oven fired by wood..topping them with butter (homemade)..wow!!! 3. Sharma Dhaba in Jaipur near vishwakarma industrial area, I think on Chomu road..normal north indian rajasthani dishes. All the vegetables are home grown. 4. Few more Dhabas on Delhi-Chandigarh highway..great foos especially after a long ride on enfield. 5. Chennai: I recently went to a restaurant called 'Mary's' or something like that. They serve just meals, on banana leaves and keep serving till you are full upto your throat. 6. Andhra Bhawan: Delhi, plain simple food in Andhra style, which doen not hurt your pocket as well as stomach 7. Chandni Chowk,Delhi, especially Paranthawalli galli, excellent heavy stuff, can't have everyday. 8. Karim's near Jama Masjid Delhi 9. Chokhi Dhani, Jaipur, excellent ethinic rajathani food. 10. Last but not the least, Calcutta, the khichdi made as offerings during durga puja and sweet called 'Shinni' made during saraswati puja. Yummmy
