Baking Powder

Does anyone know where I can get baking powder in India? What brands are there? If there isn't Baking powder, is there any comparable substitute?

I'm trying to make these Bisquick pancakes, but one of the ingredients needed is baking soda. I'm totally cooking illiterate, so please reply as if your talking to a non-cook.

looks white, powdery, and is called baking soda/powder.

it is sodium bicarbonate, I think, but baking powder is a commonly used term.

You can find it in a squarish box, usually next to the custard/ice-cream/topping/milk flavouring powder section. Says "baking powder" on it But why don't you just go to a supermarket and simply ask for it..

Just out of interest, don't these mixes come with everything in them bar the water (and maybe egg)?

Mr Pastry should know!

But no, 'Baking powder' is an ingredient, not a ready-to-bake mix kind thing

Nick

I realise that baking powder is a seperate ingredient. However, I was under the impression that idea of a ready to use mix was just that, ie that it's ready to use. Surely if you have to add other dry ingredients that means the "mix" is nothing more than an expensive box of flour?

No Nick, I think that it's not you who has to go to bed
The question was about baking soda alone..not any ready-made mixes.

A pinch of baking soda added to batter will give you crisper fries. All pakora makers take note !!!

Baking powder and Baking soda are 2 different products, baking soda is in the baking powder mixture in some proportion with other ingredients.

ahmmm..ok...funny to debate on baking soda vs powder

It's just starch really (and that too to keep it together)..and acid, that's all that's extra in it. If you use baking soda, you need to add a little vinegar (or some acid), to make it react. If you use baking powder, you just add water, as the acid is already added. That's all the difference I think, no big deal. They're almost the same.
