How can I make sure I avoid bhang lassi.
I know not to have a 'special lassi' but can bhang lassi go by any other name. I'm looking forward to trying so many types of lassi, but I work in a 'safety critical' job and any trace of drugs would cost me my job. I was tested as soon as I got back from India in july, (my bosses seem to think the only reason we go to India is for drugs). But unfortunatly, where else would I get a job that gives me 8 weeks paid holiday a year. Thanks. Last edited by steven_ber : Oct 15th, 2003 at 18:48. |

bhang lassi
I think the bhang lassi stalls are fairly obvious. Just look for a group of foreigners in a very relaxed state. In Rajasthan they are govt run and usually have signs outside advertising their product.

you can always specify that you dont wnat it.. to over come a language barrier get some local to write the word 'no bhang' in hindi and some other local language
then make sure there's someone in the shop who can read... |

Yes, avoid them
I like to try the local herbs now and again, but I've alway steered clear of bhang lassie, and never had one by mistake (and I love to drink regular lassie). Basically, when you order a bhang lassie, you are totally in the hands of those who prepare the mixture, and not only do strengths vary, but ingredients can, too. All sorts of prescription drugs have found their way in, veterinary anaesthetics, wood alcohol... yuk.
That said, I guess you know that drug tests can only detect cannabis use less than 30 days after the last use (at the most). So, with eight weeks' holiday - if you are so inclined - you could have a blast for the first month and then be a good boy for the last one. Have a great trip, whatever!

Good if you drink a bhang lassi anywhere in India only first check and confirm that is it government approved shop or not.
We in India are believe that Bhang is a brhamin drug. We feel toxicated but not violent. We are not treated as drunked. We can use it for our betterment. Our Saint used it for doing the meditations. It can help you if you have any serious matter in your mind. If you are sad and you are drinking the bhang , you will be more and more sad and the same if you are happy and after drinking it you will start to laughing and singing. It is only one permitted drug by Vedas and religion. But excess of every thing is bad. "Lassi" is always made of Yoghurt. And we have also remedy for removing the toxication of Bhang. If you drink Yoghurt after having bhang, it removes very fast. Try it and enjoy it by laughing not in a sad mood otherwise you start weeping. |

Specials
Agree with Tom. Avoid any lassi described as 'special'.
My travel partner ordered a special lassi and would have been served it except for the chef who double checked that she wanted the bhang lassi !!! She didn't and was sooooooooo relieved. |

"Bhang" is the part of a Lassi that contains marijuana, I've heard it can be pretty toxic if you are not used to the green. Most Lassi's dont contain it though.

will llassi make me sick
i watched tavel show on india which showed a street vendor selling llassi<whitish yoghurt> but it seemed he was breaking up a chunk of ice into it.
i really doubt he purchased bottled water to make this ice.would this make a person sick,or is it safe to eat? also what is mixed in to make a bang llassi<weed?>.........are they legal?

The answer is yes and no.
In places like Jodhpur, Varansi, Jaipur, Rishikesh and Haridwar. The famous shops keep lassi (ready made) in their freezers, and they dont put ice. But some shops make it fresh for u, and u can ask them not to put ice for u. The bottom line is that your stmoach will be upset for first few days in India, even if u consume bottled water. It is the first part of the crash course,"How to get used to India". So eat and drink what ever u like. Bang lassi is not legal officially. But there is "Nothing Official About it" I never heared that someone was charged for driniking or selling bang lassi. |

Definitely agree with the previous answer...your stomach will be anyway quite upset during the first days in India.....if they make fresh lassi for you just ask not to put ice in it!
As about bhang lassi...usually has to be made with weed but it can also be made with charas-oily hash- I think it depends on the season...if it is harvesting time( around October) u can find it made by weed..or else try the charas one.....its a bomb!!!!Make sure that after that u wont have to move a lot...I dont think u will bother anyway.... Have fun All the best |

Ice kills most of the bacteria in the water, but you'd do well to avoid buying mixed drinks on the street for the first two weeks or so anyway. Give your body and your stomach some time to adjust. Almost everyone I've talked to (myself included) gets sick in India by the end of the first week of arriving. It's just a fact of life.
I've never got sick from lassi, in fact I've never got sick of having a lassi at any time of day either, come to think of it. They're delcious! They come in very flavor under the sun from plain, sweet, salted to banana, mango, papaya, even chocolate... Someone else alluded to 'bhang lassi', also called 'special lassi'. That is a very different kind of lassi made with bhang, which is taken from the marijuana plant at approximately 12-14 months growing age (as I recall from my discussions with a few Indians). The drug effect is somewhere between ganja (weed) and charras (hash) but more spiritual, if I may say. You can find it in many places in India but you'll never know how much of the drug they put in your bhang lassi, or if they put "other" things in it as well. Therefore you'd do well to steer clear of bhang lassis unless you know of people who've tried them from the very shop and/or trust the shopkeeper. There are a few "government authorized bhang shops" where the ingredients are generally more predicatable. What show on TV about India were you watching? |
