A food question - Dosa Having just returned from my first AMAZING trip to India and my first experience with South Indian food, I have a question about dosas. Is "dosa" a generic word for a variety of flat pancake-like breads? In one place I ordered dosas with buji and they resembled American pancakes. At the rail station, dosas were more like greasy French crepes, but HUGE and curled into a sort of cone shape. One restaurant was advertising 4 foot dosas! I thought they all tasted good (well, never tried the 4-footer) but just wondered what most people think of when they are talking about dosas...

I love masala dosas. I can't get enough of them. They have spicy potato fillings and come with a side dip of sambar (which is a spicy liquid dhal of South India - hard to describe the taste - a bit coconutty, very delicious).

DHOSA right open_air Dhosas are basically pancakes made of rice and lentil flour and eat with samber and coconut chutney. Originally dhosas were made plain (without any suffing) and masala one (with potato stuffing). Now you can have lots of variety .The stuffing can be anything from traditional potato to cheese, meat ,chicken .The basic ingrediants has also been changed .You can have rawa dhosas too.(made with rawa/suji/semolina)

Well... A dosa is like a pancake, but it's more like a crepe. I'd say that the best description is: Dosa : Uttapam :: Crepe : Pancake (i.e. Dosa is to Uttapam as Crepe is to Pancake)
