UK meetup

Spring has sprung, dear folks, and I think it shall soon be time to carouse once more.

Noises were made about the West Country in May...any takers? Any specific dates or other ideas?

Discworlders please read:

EDITED TO ADD: our meetups have been very South-focused so far. If members want to set up meets in other areas of the country please feel free to post here and I can set up a thread for your area.

West Country sounds good to me, count me in for sure if I'm in the country.

Please please, any weekend except a May Bank Holiday weekend, trying to get to the West Country then would be a total nightmare.

Once upon a time, my then wife and myself drove a two-stroke SAAB into those countries. The experience, facing a village a couplea hundred metres in front of you but waaay down, contemplating the possible necessity of the numerous emergency exits... Well, sweet revenge when our air cooled engine passed quite a few boiling radiators on returning.

Meaning, there are several people and places that might tempt me to spend a couple of weeks in your isolated island(s).

I'd be up for scumble-quaffing/curry-eating next month.

Other half and I will be heading to Castle Combe for a petrolheads meet-up on 16th May so couldn't do that day (but 17th might be possible as we're staying over somewhere in darkest Wiltshire that night).

I second Haylo's request to avoid the Bank Holiday weekends, not being fond of sitting in caravan infested traffic jams (otherwise known as M5 and A303).

Mm, need to plan another camping/cycling/cider drinking trip to Somerset - even grockly Cheddar has an above average tandoori.

Camping... Good point, it would be nice to be able to have a drink. It's a tall order, but in the absence of a hospitable IndiaMiker, having somewhere we can camp within walking distance of a purveyor of good food would be perfect.

Ooh ooh! (eyes light up)

Camping somewhere in the West Country in May! I'm up for it! Not a Bank Holiday weekend - sounds even better - we might get better weather

Having said that, I've got commitments on both the non-BH Saturday mornings - but if we're not too far from a motorway somewhere (M5, M4, whatever), that needn't be a problem. (er, perhaps not anywhere remotely connected to Ankh-Morpork? )

(Oh and Nick - sorry you won't be over this June ... yeah. Just think of it this way - I'll make your cancelled trip to the West Country in June, if you'll do my unaffordable visit to Chennai in November? Also )

Not even inna bun?

If you can't make May weekends easily, we could always make it the first weekend in June.

What do they call that month? "Flaming June"? Believe me, that's not what I've called it the last couple of years!

Can't do 1st weekend in June - another petrolheads thing in Derbyshire - birthday party for someone turning 60 (but who in his head is still 17)

2 child-free Zummerzet campsites I have been to:

The Old Oaks, Wick (in an orchard just outside Glastonbury - has very civilised bathroom blocks, very quiet, but no pub within staggering distance) - http://www.adultstouring.co.uk/theoldoaks.htm, review at http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/re...asp?revid=2782.

Cheddar Bridge Touring Park (Cheddar): http://www.cheddarbridge.co.uk/, review at http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/re...asp?revid=3688
Site not quite as nice, but within a walk of Cheddar - Shahnaz better than average Brit-curry (but not as interesting as the South Indian places we've been to in Bristol and Cardiff).

Open to other suggestions for other West Country locations (preferably with cider/camping/curry combination). If only a techie could combine Old Scrump's cider map (http://www.ciderandperry.co.uk/) with the ukcampsites map and a good Indian restaurant guide ...

Another suggestion - instead of heading west go east ..

Ankh Morpork meets Kerala ... better known as Cambridge

Pleasantly unreal, definitely Unseen University territory (albeit with more mathmos than wizards), Cam water not unlike Ankh water, punt on the Cam if we can't make it to the backwaters near Alleppey; more than one Keralan restaurant (http://www.riceboat.com/ and http://rajmalabar.keralagroup.co.uk/ - part of same group as Krishnas Inn in Bristol).

Suggest Ssall does some advance research ...

1st weekend in June is out then. There are three "Non Bank Holiday" Saturdays in May, the 9th, 16th and 30th. Also maybe at a push the 13th June.

As 18th May is a public holiday in India, if I do get back over there, I'm likely to be away for 16th May. Are there any other dates that people can't make?

Open to ideas about other locations, I've always wanted to go look at Cambridge. Only thing is, Cambridge doesn't sound like a place with a lot of budget accommodation, but maybe I'm stereotyping?
