Yes, a good time was had by all. My apologies to nycank and laughingbuddha towards the end though. I was feeling really ill and could barely keep it together.

It indeed was nice meeting everyone, and a good time indeed. Merchant, the pictures are great. Thank you indeed.
(Holy $^!#, I look like a hindi movie villian with that paan in my mouth , but Merchant did capture the moment. (A reason why I am a failed photographer!))

Hopefully, I'll write a short report about the meetup if anyone is curious.

New York City Meetups

Hi all,

Janice and I are trying to put together a meetup for New York City for Jan/Feb of 2007. Anyone interested?

Last time we met as a restaurant called Sarvanas, and went for some Paan and beers after.

Reply to this thread if you are, and please suggest some dates.

P.S. Here's the excerpt from Janice's original thread:

having recently started a kolkata meet-up thread, yet being a newbie, i feel a rather unlikely candidate for party initiator for a NYC meet-up, but am jumping in anyway. what are we made of, fellow new yorkers? post here if you'd like to try to pull one off. i'm leaving for my (first) trip to india february 13, and would really enjoy meeting some of you before i do. (though after's good as well, when i might actually know from whence i speak!)

I'd definitely be interested. Since this is my first post, let me make a brief introduction. I'm preparing to make my first trip to India, probably the first week of March. I plan to stay for 3-4 months, and I have no firm dates for anything at this point. I don't have any travel partners planned, but I'm sure things will sort themselves out once I'm there.

I've been browsing IM for 3 weeks or so, but so far spent all my time just keeping up with the new content and skimming the old threads in some forums (that is, not asking a question that's already been answered five times). I'm looking in to enrolling in either HMI or NIM for a March or April course (realize I need to get moving on this). NIM's website has this gem:
Quote:
"In this interaction of individuals and mountains, every trainee must discover himself anew in the sublime but challenging mountain arena, so that a mountaineer with the right semblance of vision and a keen penchant for heights is born mental robustness, character building, self discipline, leadership, self confidence, endurance and kindling of spirit of adventure are all advantageous fall outs of the training imparted."
I'm in my mid-20s and bored with my current situation. I studied in Switzerland for one year at university, and I've traveled a few times in Western Europe, twice in Mexico (D.F., Guadalajara, Michoacan and Jalisco by car), and once in China (only HK and Shenzhen). I've done a fair amount of backpacking in the American West but I think some trekking in the Himalayas would be unforgettable. If I don't manage to get in a course at HMI or NIM, I might still look for a place in HP or Uttarakhand for a couple months. A couple months traveling and a couple based somewhere in either of those states sounds quite nice. Will the monsoon be hitting there by June?

hi, beklemmung, and welcome to indiamike! thanks for dropping in to introduce yourself on this NYC thread. glad to read that you're finding answers and inspiration here, and that you'd like to join in an NYC meet-up. this site has been invaluable to my trip planning, and i often enjoy it as much for its intelligent dialogue as i do for the india content. where in NYC do you live? (i'm on the UWS, not sure about nadreg.) PM me if you like.

all best and, again, welcome aboard.

Neither does Nadreg.

Crossing the Border?

Since when did India and USA have a border?

But where do the meetup threads go? Yak Yak, I suppose...

that's odd! i posted it first in the one meet-up thread, but with all the meet-ups posted sequentially, randomly, i suggested to nadreg that we (ahem, i mean you, monitors!) perhaps kick around another way to list them, by date or location or something. meantime, nadreg kindly started a new thread for us. but that's the odd part...it wasn't in "crossing the border". i think they were in "yak-yak" and "announcements", respectively. hmmmmm....maybe not. but it seems it's been mysteriously moved...mod fun? gremlins? poltergeists? whatever...as long as it gets exposure, we NYC folks are happy. (actually, the way things are going under this imperialist administration, we may well end up with a border with india!)
