I wsa just about to post something about that.
I actually lived in this hood for a while.
Its mostly 1st av, around 4th, 5th and 6th. None of these restaurants are owned by Indians. They all seem to be Bangladeshi owned. FYI..... some are pretty bad. There is also another Indian neighbourhood around 23rd and Lex. I think I went to a good South Indian restaurant there.

There's also Jackson Heights, where I live. Home to New York's own Bombay beer bar (well, not really, though at 2 in the morning you can use your imagination and pretend you've stepped into the pages of "Maximum City").

One of my friends wrote this article; I took the picture:

(For some reason, the first time you click the link, you get the main page. Come back and click again, you get the Beer Bar story.)

More pictures are here:

The food's really good, too.

Hi guys

Sorry to be a nag but I need more details about the meetup because its only a few weeks away and my husband is asking me why he can't schedule call duty that night at hospital. I told him I will get definitive details about the meetup.

Not in NYC right now (unfortunately) so dont know the latest places to arrange the meetup. How many of us are coming. Whats the plan timing etc? Being only 22 days away I was curious..

Thanks!

I live in the Jackson Heights neighborhood as well. I vote for Jackson Heights first, the area around 28th & Lex second, and the insane Bangladeshi restaurants around 1st third.

Of course the proximity of good paan to the first two choices would really be swaying my vote.

If everything -- especially the date -- is set in stone maybe I can make it as well. I know i am new here, and post even less, but I've been lurking a long time. Oh, and if it is outside Manhattan (okay, if i have to take anything other than "A" train) I may need some help

OK... Let's get a headcount and a vote for where to meet:

I'm in for Oct 7th, and I prefer to meet in Manhattan for lunch. I'll find an appopriate place and suggest something. It might be easier for the out of towners as well to meet in Manhattan. Jackson Heights can get a little hairy for newcomers.

Everyone who is coming please say "AYE".

Aye (+1 guest) one for Oct 7th!

Anything is fine with us. We are coming from Philadelphia so Manhattan is very easy but I know Jackson Heights too. Manhattan takes my vote.

The only way you will get me to Jackson Heights is in a Rickshaw, and I am not talking about those bicycle rickshaws that charge $20 for 10 blocks!!!!

Haha! I go to Chennai or Hyderabad. Infinetly better in many regards than Mumbai and quieter. I dont think its about being brave I think its just convenience and centrally located for all.
Funny though

New York City Meetups

The NYC Meetup is set for Manhattan on Sat, Oct 7th for lunch. All members who would like to attend, please confirm by replying to this thread as soon as possible.

I did a little bit of research, and I'm suggesting the Hampton Chutney Co, which is located at 464 Amsterdam Ave (bet. 82nd & 83rd Sts), Manhattan, NY.

It's rated as one of the cheaper, but good, restaurants by Zagat. Here are some snippets from their reviews:

The “post-yoga-class” SoHo crowd collects for “cheap-but-delicious” “Indian fusion” dosa wraps, “lightly spiced with curry and a smile”

Let me know if this is good for everyone, or if you'd prefer to meet someplace else.

I was so excited about this meetup. As far as I remember this would be the first for New York area.

However my husband has a conference in Arizona and bought tickets for both of us. I will try my hardest to get out of the conference (hopefully United Airlines will refund my money) and if so I am in for sure! If not I hope its a roaring success! I need 2 days..will get back to you Nadreg asap!
