Even though you are very logical, but don't you thing the decision should be left to the concerned IMers. If she/she feels that friend is worthy enough then only the members will bring that person.
My only concern is how effective would be a check ? Or rather than putting a check which can twisted, shall we not trust the judgment of fellow IMer.\ ? |

Phew guys. Your Delhi (or anyone else's) meets are no business of mine of course, and I thought I'd wisely leave you to your own deliberations, which you've now been doing, but here in Amsterdam we say: All welcome, no need for invites, the more the merrier. (And I don't know about you guys but I'll meet my own friends in my own time, most of them wouldn't be the least bit interested in some forum meet-up that means nothing to them anyway.)
I thought it was so at most meet-ups anywhere, perhaps limited if at all by the need to make advance reservations and so on (I personally usually look for a way to avoid that need, precisely to keep it more flexible and accessible. This may be less easily done in many Indian locations though, I don't know that. It's usually no big deal to show up with a manageable group of people where I live, or one can try a neighboring location or so.) (It should be added you guys seem to have the higher turn-up, in A'dam so far we're happy if anyone shows up at all )But if you're asking for some outsider advice, I'd say keep it as open as possible yes, why not. If you're worried about your identity being given away or so, there's no way to know a "known" (how well do you know most of them anyway?) IM'er won't do this, so you'd better just keep your dealings here more private then, and probably not get into any 1:1's at all. People may have good reason not to btw, there's no shame in that, and no one should push them to. I must say I've met some interesting and nice folks here in our meets who were brought along by others, and they had an interest in India, else, why would they have bothered to come at all. It may work differently for you guys being right on the spot there & with some people regularly signing up here apparently just to socialize with little to contribute as such, this could be a complication yes, I can see that. Find it hard to judge from here. But internationally and purely from my end, I wouldn't suggest to have the meetings restrictive no. But then no doubt each local group will develop their own style, and maybe I should just shut up, and anyway what do I know I don't expect nor would want there to develop some international protocol for it anyway.

ps Maybe a relevant question & to get down to basics would be have you Delhi IM meet organizers or attendants noticed a large influx of non-related visitors, and if so, did you find this disruptive to the proceedings?
If not, I'd suggest not to worry about it at this stage. If yes, it would seem only natural to want to look into this perhaps. I mean if I had to deal with sixty people here half of whom I have no idea of where they're coming from, I might want to and probably would think about it too, of course. |

I think puchoo has a good point here - but I think we should be flexible enough if a Member has a non-member friend staying with him/her and it would be embarassing to leave the friend behind, and relying on the Member's good judgement, then no problem with bringing in these sort of circumstances. Basically the purpose of the Meet Ups is for Members to get to know each other - bringing a group of 10 non-members as mentioned previously is just not on in my book. I doubt this would ever happen though - from what I've experienced from previous Meet Ups! If a friend wants to come and meet some members with a view to joining IM, that seems to me o.k. too.

Very interesting.... I think Aishah is quite right. I also feel that IMers are quite manutured to decide for themselves. Turning the meet ups in to huge parties is surely not in the agenda of any member I think.

I was going to bring maybe one friend two at the most.. this is getting waaaay to complicated. I can appreciate rules and regulations( I live and breath toooo many everyday) but, this is a bit silly. Just wanted to meet some people and have a beer ( pretty simple).
ohhh welll..... I will continue to read and contribute ( what little I can to the board). This is still a great place for info. |

Tapatio - it's not complicated at all. IM Meet Ups are not huge gatherings - and really to date there have been no rigid 'rules'. If you want to bring a friend for company for yourself I don't think others would find it a problem. The thing is the Meet Ups have never been an 'open house' kind of gathering. Members indicate if they will be present, spouses and close friends sometimes come as well. An idea beforehand of the numbers is necessary for the booking of the venue etc. I'm sure Members would like to meet you as much as you will enjoy meeting the Members. And if you want to bring a friend along, seems fine to me. I hope others will think so too?

IMHO - its seems there is a lot of common ground here. No one appears to be arguing for an exclusive get together, bound by rules, complete with a membership check. At the same time the main purpose of the meeting is a get together for IM people interested in meeting other IM people. If you have friends in town, house guests, family, and you want to bring them along then I'm sure they would be more than welcomed.

I'm in doubt to have the 'famed club' as venue for any future IM meetups as I've few 'complaints' from the management and I do not want to put my membership at stake.
Essex farm is fine. |
