Dear All

Do not intend to be the party-pooper (especially since I have never attended one! ) However, I was thinking aloud about the idea to having the get-together at someone's place (Nikhil in this instance) rather than a public joint and this is why I feel it may not be the best idea:

1. Let's accept it, whoever organises it, will definitely be inconvenienced at some level. BYOB definitely helps but the odds of something or the other going wrong are very high specially with attendees from diverse groups. A public joint would help avoid this, be it at the cost of a large space. I think a cramped space may be worth taking the risk with rather than the host having to suffer (totally my thought - am open to ideas).

2. Unfortunately, it takes all kinds. And there must be people like me (a bit shy, hesitant etc.) who may not be comfortable doing this at a private place and will be much more comfortable at a public one. We may end up not having enough people to attend this at Nikhil's. I have resolved to come out of my shell this time so I will surely come but some of the others may not and that won't be nice.

These are just random thoughts.

Please feel free to express your opinion

ps1. I may be way off the mark not having any first hand knowledge / experience of this group's dynamics...
ps2. I also am susceptible to bouts of overthinking and overcomplicating things I'm told...

Nitts: Some very thoughful points raised by you however my take is that, lets give it a shot..if it doesnt work out we can always revert to Volga/Flames etc.

Cheers,
Shamik

You never know unless you try, is what I always say. Two IMers felt comfortable enough to offer opening their homes to the group. Nikhil knows the nature of the meetups well and is a sensible fellow. I doubt he'd had offered if he didn't trust that we wouldn't be too much hassle, but we might contribute a bit to an "appeasing the maid" pot to address issues of convenience.

As far as shy people goes... we can always have several in public places, we'd just like to give this a shot. Shy people also have trouble going to public places and some might feel more welcome and accepted in a group in a private setting. As far as privacy goes, any room with as many people as usually come to IM meet-ups can hardly be considered intimate. At any rate, I'm sure there are pros and cons to all different forms of meetups, but we don't know all of them, so we're trying something new. If it sucks, we all owe Nikhil a drink for being brave enough to offer his home and can forever more arrange them at bars. If it doesn't... well, we just found something else to enjoy. Hope this novel of an answer puts some of your fears to rest, and also that you can make it out to the next one

I have discussed the two points mentioned by Nitts with Nikhil, and then only we decided do it this way.

we need to understand that whatever you do, you cannot make entire Junta happy. There would always be people who do not like a particular way of doing things.

The best way out is to keep trying different things and rotating them, whoever feels comfortable with whatever method will definitely get a chance, and they can voice their opinions, call for a meetup of their own etc etc.

Cachaca: hmmmm, bitterballen and kroketten! Why you think I'm going to Holland :-)? Will try to find a recipe, make some and bring them to the meetup.

Enjoy!

Nittsmehta, you definitely have some valid points, and I can certainly appreciate your concern and thoughtfullness behind your point of view. However.....

1) I'm confident many of us will pitch in, so that it won't be a burden on Nikhil.

2) Shy uncomfortable people are going to be shy uncomfortable people no matter where we have it...(i.e. - having it in a public place didn't bring you out last time, did it?) We already have enough interested people for a good turn out already, so not to worry.

Nittsmetta, I can certainly understand your apprehension. It's quite normal to feel uncomfortable meeting a group of strangers -much less in someone's private home. However, having attended several meetups and having met the people involved, I assure you that this is a great group of safe, fun people.

Now is as good a time as any to get back in the loop. Watch this space for final dates and lists

VdVoort,

Hope to see you at the meetup. A small favor if possible. I collect Vodka. its at an almost crazy level. Holland has three great vodkas which I never seem to find at duty free shops, namely Ketel One (US$ 35), Effen Vodka (US$ 70) and Vox (US$30) if you could carry back a bottle in order of preference Effen, Kettel One or Vox (ANY ONE) I would be really obliged (if you aren't a duty free shopper and can buy two to carry back WOOHOOO)
Will reimburse in US$ / Euro / INR your choice. No pressure, if you can then GREAT if NOT the GREAT TOO!

Nitts,

You have heard it all, there was just one reason for having it at home. AT public venues one can't seem to mingle and chat with everyone. One stays restricted to the immediate people on your left and right. This way we can mingle and really chat with everyone.

Zenia,

Sounds like a plan, the 19th is a Sunday.. as long as folks don't want to rush back cos Monday is working it should be good. I will of course confirm closer to the date depending on my travel plans which are well ... very sudden usually.

Some horrid stuff that is plasticky in flavor at INA. The fact that it is in a plastic packing probably adds to it!

Well my suggesting is that you DON'T go till the 20th of the month or so, or carry a small amount of money and no credit cards ...

I usually end up spending 1/2 a kings ransom there!
