Depends on when I wake up to catch the inbound flight.. 6AM ? 7AM ? (Its I gather every hour into AMS)

Aha. Erm, with a time difference of four hours or so (assuming you're coming from NY), you don't seriously want us to log in here hourly at that time to see what your plans are, right?*

Any plans for your return trip?

* (Seriously, even from town where I am that would barely give me time to brush my teeth and get over there, well, not at a civilized early morning's pace anyway. Besides, not being much of an early bird, not so sure if I'm gonna make it to this one, sorry... I could surely try my best though, with any luck I'll still be awake Something of a fixed time I'd much prefer though, and I still wouldn't promise anything. I guess it being a Thursday our time many others will just have their daily obligations to attend.)

(On that note, getting there by public transport before say 7/8 AM'ish could prove a hassle in itself. Besides, when would you let us know? 2AM? 6AM? Not very feasible I'm afraid, NYC. 'Tis a pity, I would have otherwise loved to.)

So to be clear: Don't fix yourself to a time for me, I probably won't be there anyway. Sorry. (btw The only time you ever gave was 0900 UTC October 8th for you to know when you'd be coming in. How does that put you here in the early morning, am I missing something? --> Ah, so looking that up, I thought it was an American time zone -- I'm sure I looked it up when you wrote it -- but it seems to be the universal zone, close to GMT rather. Well, sorry for any confusion. How were you expecting to let us know at that hour then; from the airplane, upon landing? )

Now Now... Which US/EU carrier does every hour on the hour to AMS from NYC

I'm less than 90 min flight time away from AMS take-off-to-touch down... Maybe I'll go on the other side of Schiphol to Aalsmeer (sp?) and get some seeds and bulbs.

No return flight via AMS

Er, yes, OK, so in short: Just drop us a line here when the time comes. But don't expect anything, OK?

(Aalsmeer not so sure how close by for a quick dash. Hardly the season either [should be spring]. Bulbs will be available at Schiphol no doubt; probably illegal to bring into US though, not sure. They'll no doubt be able to tell you.)

In the interest of not losing a free upgrade (stingy b*d KLM) I have decided it is not worth my while to risk a Voluntary Boarding Compensation. While the chances of a full flight are very high. The carrier will not put me up for the night or give me 400EUR

Aalsmeer flower market/auction exchange abuts the airport. How else do you think they load a full KL 747 Cargo/Freight to JFK every day ?

Concerning bringing bulbs to the US.

The ones they sell at Schiphol airport are completely sanitized (or whatever you do with bulbs) and come with all the necessary healthdeclarations.

It's a funny sort of mega-plaza, isn't it. If only the beer were cheaper (and the smoking areas not discontinued altogether)

Fairly efficient compared to some others really, I think. Oh well. Sorry to have missed you, NYC; maybe a next time! Did you get your flower bulbs?

Beer was free (but too early @630AM), and a smoking area in the lounge. Yes, there is a whole shop devoted to bulbs, seeds and other horticultural stuff

Ah, only the fancy overstayers get all the fun, eh (smoking). Us mere mortal sinners have to stand outside these days.

Sheesh !!! Why ? Between gates E & gates F, there is an Escalator going to the upstair lounges. Turn right; on the left you'll find the KLM lounge and corridor to the other airline lounges, to the right you'll find a few restaurants. One of the restaurant has a smoking area. Of Course, you'll have to buy something - get a beer and enjoy your cigs.

Well, that is good to know -- and it would obviously take a foreign visitor to know these things

Will keep it in mind, thanks.

(On my last flight over Heathrow I was similarly told that sure enough, no, there is no chance of smoking there, not even outside. On the return flight however a lady who knew the route showed me how in fact you can go outside and smoke no problem, there are these standing ashtrays provided and stuff. Being in transit it does involve going back through security of course, allow some time for this. I suppose non-EU'ers may not be allowed it.)
