Gametotravel, I am interested in attending the Regatta, but I am unable to PM you (I think it has something to do with my post count, so maybe this one will put me over the top.) If you can PM me, please do so. Otherwise, if you wish to send me the info, please send it to 607535@gmail.com (a mailbox I set up for a contact in another thread to bypass lack of PM capability). Do we need to call the Boat Club for permission/entry pass or anything like that? Looking forward to seeing IMers there.

Nick, can you do anything to set me up to be able to PM? I tried again yesterday and still got a privilege error.

Okay now I have something interesting to share with IM'ers; I got a circular a day back from Madras Boat Club announcing the Madras Colombo Regatta on coming Saturday July the 19th. 3pm.

The Madras Colombo Regatta is over 100years old having begun in the year 1898 when a crew of the Madras Boat Clubsailed across the Palk Strait to Colombo to participate in a "fours" race. From then on it became a yearly feature where a team would go across either side to participate alternatively. This year it is Chennai aka Madras's opportunity to host the event and any interested public(there are not too many) can come and watch the races from the banks. They have shamiana and chairs laid out for the viewers. Also some snacks will be served it is learnt.

This should be suitable for most people as this event is in character with this city. The event goes on till 6pm after which there is a Regatta Night to celebrate and facilitate the rowers at 8pm.

So if people are interested just pm me for my contact number and other particulars. I am giving the Club's phone numbers for any general confirmation:- They are 044 24326728 and 24354751.

I hope people make use of this opportunity and make it!

No need of any permission as it is open to public . I will however email my contact no so that any specific doubts can be taken care of!

Markro, the system senses your patience levels and grants PM permissions accordingly. Every time you try, it either lets you in, or adds a random amount to the required number of posts and length of membership...

Seriously, I think it is five posts and ten days membership, but Nadreg tends to adjust our anti-spam measures from time to time (as an anti-spam measure) and I'm never sure of the exact current parameters.

You should be almost there!

Honestly, we don't do it to annoy people. The main reason was the amount of crap turning up in the PM boxes of female members from guys whose sole reason for membership was just that.

It also acts as a deterrent to the many tour operators who sign up just to send a volley of PMs to prospects. You'd be amazed how many we ban before they even get a post in, but even the blood hounds on the mod team couldn't sniff them all out if they were allowed to PM straight away.

Is six magic?

Thanks, Nick

Turns out the five posts is still not allowing me to PM. Will six be the magic number that allows me to send Private Messages? Enquiring minds want to know!

Gametotravel, I got the email and will call later to establish a time/place to meet. Hope to see people at the Regatta tomorrow.

By the way, I read that there is also a Volleyball tournament going on at Elliots beach (yesterday-Sunday, I think) which has gotten in trouble with the local BJP because some of the women players are dressed in a way which is not "culturally respectful". I wonder if that means sports bikinis (which would really push limits here) or just "shorts and T-shirts" (in which case BJP is trying to prove that they are as extreme here as in Gujurat). Anyway, this would be another fun event in addition to the Regatta. Any interest?

Mark

io posts will qualify you to PM. Though once you get the privelage it ceases to be as important!

The BJP is not so strong here(TN). BJP is overall a party of educated middle and upper middle class Hindus and are open to counter arguments.

Here in this case in Beach Volleyball that(bikini) is the is the proscribed dress!

Sorry to be filling this thread with meetup unrelated matters, but I really want to get my post count up

As for the BJP, I agree with Gametotravel about the TN BJP; I have a number of friends in the party (including some Christians) and they are mostly very reasonable people. In some other areas of the country (IMHO) they have a strongly communal image. I understand that TN is one of the more conservative areas of the country, but I would hope that all partys could remain open to reason. If, though, two-piece suits are required wear for female players, I am surprised that more groups are not upset.

It is all a question of which party takes up the issue first! Remember in IPL Shiv Sena were raising a cry on Cheerleaders dress but Chennai and Kolkata did not; though Chennai Cheerleaders were conservatively dressed!

I don't think those guys have a very big presence here, do they?

DMK/ADMK and their satellite parties seem to mostly hold the stage...

Nope, they dont

Tamilnadu always belongs to the Tamils, its either DMK or AIADMK. National parties will never form a government here.

So how many here are planning to attend the regatta? I'll be in Chennai this afternoon, but am not sure how long my other appointments will take. I'll try to attend, and will be wearing a white Tilley hat.

I don't think I can, so my Tilley hat (I inherited several from my mother who loved them) will have to stay in the cupboard this time.

Enjoy!
